Year One visit the Harold Hill Library
Over the last two weeks, Year One have been visiting Harold Hill Library. The children walked to their local library, which many said they had visited before.
When we arrived at the library, we were greeted by the librarian Viv, who explained all about Havering's library service. She showed the children the library card and how it worked. She also told them about all the different books in the children's section of the library, from board books, to picture and chapter books.
The children were then given the opportunity to spend some time exploring the library and taking some time to read books that they hadn't seen before. They then chose one to take out of the library which is kept in school for them to access.
We ended our fabulous visit with a story from Viv, called 'Winnie the Witch', by Korky Paul and Valerie Thomas. The children loved the story and the costume!
Reading with your child is vital. Research shows that it's the single most important thing you can do to help your child's education. It's best to read little and often, so try to put aside some time for it every day.
Think of ways to make reading fun - you want your child to learn how pleasurable books can be. If you're both enjoying talking about the content of a particular page, linger over it for as long as you like.
Books aren't just about reading the words on the page, they can also present new ideas and topics for you and your child to discuss.
