Last week in Maths, Year One were looking at addition stories and word problems. The children chose their favourite class stories to seek out their own maths problems from the words and pictures. They then went on to use the bar model or multilink to help them find answers to their number sentences.
The children really enjoyed being able to 'spot' the maths and numbers in their storybooks and make up their own word problems. Below are some of our favourites!
"In this story there are 5 ladybirds and 7 insects, how many bugs are there altogether?" Harry
"Once upon a time, a group of children went to the funfair. 6 boys went on the merry-go-round and 3 girls went on the carousel. How many children were there altogether?" Arnez
"Once upon a time, there was a lovely green field where lots of flowers were growing. There were 3 blue flowers and 10 red flowers and 1 pink flower. How many flowers?" Katlyn
"In the bar model the answer goes at the top and then you match up the bars to help find missing numbers" Andrew
