Elfie McMagic’s mischievous visit!

Well, what an eventful few weeks it has been in Cedar class!

Elfie McMagic arrived in style with two letters to Cedar, one from Elfie, and the other from the man himself, Mr Claus.
In no time at all Elfie Mcmagic was getting up to all sorts of mischief, and our class turned upside down! We found our fruit bowl on the floor with the carrots strewn all about (luckily he picked all the old ones!)
But the mayhem didn't stop there, as our book corner came under fire. Pillows and books were strewn all over the floor, but the children started cleaning it up right away (after some stern words with Elfie!)

But disaster struck again when we walked into the classroom to find Elfie McMagic hanging above the teacher's desk with this letter beneath him:
The lollipops were gone! And so the hunt around the classroom began, but they were nowhere to be found. Finally at lunch time the pupils came back into class to find lollipops strewn all over the floor (one for every child!), he'd clearly been feeling generous.

As if to make up for the generosity, the next our colour pencils were all over the floor!

And today Elfie McMagic had written us one last message, saying farewell again, until next Christmas!

Year 2 Star Writers

Congratulations to these two wonderful children who are our star writers in Year 2 this week.

Gabriela wrote a fantastic information text all about shipwrecks. She used subheadings effectively; worked hard to write in her best handwriting and included lots of wonderful factual information.

Lucas has been writing his own story using a plan. He has included all of the 'story bags' to ensure his story has structure and even included great adjectives to add description to his story.

Well done children!

Mulberry's Star Writer

Mulberry's Star Writer

Kayden is the Star Writer in Mulberry class this week.  He wrote a letter to Santa Claus independently.  Kayden told Santa Claus what Mulberry's cheeky Elf had been up to in class throughout December! Well done Kayden!

Year 2 Christmas Afternoon!

WOW! What a wonderful afternoon we had in Year 2 on Friday!

The children loved writing their letters to Santa, ensuring they were using their absolute best handwriting, spelling and punctuation which is sure to impressive the big man!

After, the children excitedly went into the Grotto and were surprised by a very special guest who gave them a little treat from his stocking. Children then enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate with marshmellows and biscuits and finally settled down for a song as well as a Christmas story to end the afternoon.

A huge thank you to everybody who attended - it really was a fantastic turn out.I don't think we have ever squeezed so many children and parents into Year 2 before!

Year 2 Reading

Reading is a key priority at Broadford as reading well is vital to later success in life. All children nationally should be reading comfortably by the age of 6 which is why, especially in Year 2, we have such an emphasis on reading to ensure the children do not miss this target.

At school, all children will read once a week with an adult, in addition to daily independent reading. Children are also read to by the class teacher for a minimum of 15 minutes at the end of each day. We monitor a child's home reading through their reading record, and whilst these records show that many of the children are reading with their parents avidly at home, we have noticed that some reading records are not meeting our requirements. We require that pupils read with an adult for a minimum of 15 minutes a day.

Parents and the home environment are essential to the early teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading; children are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued. Research has identified several benefits to reading for pleasure including:
  • Reading attainment and writing ability;
  • Text comprehension and grammar;
  • Breadth of vocabulary;
  • Positive reading attitudes;
  • Greater self-confidence as a reader;
  • Pleasure in reading in later life;
  • General knowledge;
  • A better understanding of other cultures;
  • Community participation; and
  • A greater insight into human nature and decision-making.

    Clark and Rumbold (2006)

We really do love reading in year 2! Take a look at some of our most recent reading snaps. We thank you for your continued support in assisting the children to make such great progress in reading.

And The Cedar Homework Champions Are...

A huge well done to Kanishka, Moyin, Katlyn and Temilola! These children have won the Cedar Homework race for the autumn term! The girls have climbed the tree each week because they have brought in their spelling books every single week and have also earned 'bonus climbs' when they have got 10/10 in their tests.

Regular spelling practise is important because it helps reinforce what the children have been learning at School and supports the children in broadening their vocabulary which in turn,  helps them become better writers and readers too!

Our expectation is that the pupils practise their ten spellings each night Monday - Thursday in preparation for the spelling test that we hold on Friday morning. We encourage the children to use these spellings in sentences for even greater understanding.

Once again, a big well done to the winners, and to all the pupils who have worked so hard at their spelling this term. Let's see who can be the top spelling chimp next term - the race will start again on the first week back!

Tracker Hunt in Year 1

Tracker Hunt in Year 1

In Geography the children had to work together to find their trackers.  All of Year 1's trackers were taken by Pirate Pete!  They had to read the clues in the outside area and follow the directions given.  They used their Geography skills to move North, East, South and West.

                  "We need to walk 20 steps North." - Iyinope

                 "Never, eat, shredded, wheat - North, East, South, West!" - Iniya

Shape Shadow investigation

Shape Shadow Investigation

This week in year 1, the children have been busy investigating which 3D shapes made the shadows!
They had to apply their previous knowledge of shape and shape properties to try to solve the problem. After finding out the name of the faces which made the shadows, the children were able to identify which 3D shapes they may belong to.
A cylinder has a circle face - Augustas
The square might be a cube  - Aarna

Pine Star Writer

Pine Star Writer

The star writer in Pine class is awarded to Ellie Chalmers for her amazing letter writing.
Ellie wrote a letter to Santa explaining what the naughty elf has been getting up to in Pine class. She included lots of interesting adjectives and used a conjunction to extend her sentence.

Well done Ellie - keep up the good work!

Rowan parents- lost uniform

Hi parents and carers,

After our wonderful nativity play, a few pieces of uniform have gone astray.

Ruby is missing a pinafore and we have a pinafore left in our classroom. Could you please check to see if anyone has picked up the wrong dress by mistake.

We also have a white t-shirt and 3 pairs of tights.

Please come into Rowan Class to collect any items which you believe belongs to you.

We have sent any jumpers with name in home tonight and any without names have been sent to lost property by the office.

Many thanks

Miss Chappel

Bedtime Stories in Year One

Bedtime Stories in Year One!

On Friday night, the children in Year One came back into school wearing pajamas, onesies, dressing gowns and slippers, ready for a Christmas bedtime story.

They waited eagerly outside their classrooms until 5pm when the classroom doors opened!

The classrooms had been transformed into a magic wonderland, filled with fairy lights, fireplace and a hot chocolate station .

The children were excited to come in and see their friends, before snuggling down on the throws ready for some Christmas bedtime stories.

I

Thank you to all of our lovely parents, who brought the children back into school for such an amazing Christmassy experience!

Justine Greening Visits Year 2!

Recently, the children in Year 2 were honoured to have a visit from the Secretary of State for Education - Justine Greening!

First, Justine spoke to Miss Estall about our self-led approach to learning which allows for greater depth and understanding due to the use of focus group teaching. We then discussed the importance of independence and time management as this is a life-long skill which we must acquire to be successful. Both of these skills are developed daily using our approach.

Justine then went to interact with the children; they were so excited to have a real life celebrity in their classroom and were keen to show off what they do on a daily basis!
 Justine spent time with children who were completing their class 'jobs' such as, finding amounts of money, sorting true/false money statements, writing kenning poems and researching Australian animals... all in the children's independent time.

Klaidi - "She watched me do my Showbie job, she was really nice and friendly."

Maddison - "I was using the QR to find out about Kookaburras, she said she liked my writing."

Kanishka - "We were doing our shape poems, I had 7 kennings about a rabbit, I was excited for Justine to see my writing."

Well done children, you certainly did us proud!

Year 2 Christmas Afternoon!

The children in Year 2 would like to welcome you into their classes this Friday afternoon to enjoy some Christmas activities!

Year One's Surprise Visitor...

On the 1st December, Year One received a letter...

Year One children, my dreams came true,

I’ve been chosen to come and stay with you.

Your teacher saw me and said I could,

Stay in class if I was good.

Your TA welcomed me with a smile and said that I could stay a while,

So in your class is where I’ll be,

Until Santa says, he needs me.

At home time when you head away,

In class is where I’m going to stay.

At night is when I have my fun,

Did I tell you I’m a cheeky one…?

In the day, I follow the class rules,

 But tomorrow you’ll see the chaos I cause.

In the morning, you might find a surprise,

I don’t think you’ll believe your eyes.

One last thing …I don’t ask for much,

But the one rule is, you cannot touch.

I am actually covered in invisible magic and

If you touch me, it would be so tragic

My magic helps the tricks I play and if you touch me the trick will fade away.

By the way, you should learn my name,

And the surprise will never be the same.

You be good and I’ll be the one,

Who creates all of the Christmas fun!

We can't wait to see what he does on Monday morning!!!

Marvellous Map Work in Year 1

Marvellous Map Work in Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been working on our map skills.  The children have used google maps and highlighted routes to get from our school to Central Park.  They have written their directions to get to the park. Year 1 now know the best route to take to visit their favourite park!

"I can get to the park!" - Neo
"You go left, straight, left then right." - Adrian

Puzzling Problem Solvers!

Puzzling Problem Solvers!

Maths has been full of problems for Year 1 this week. The children have been working super hard to use different strategies to solve tricky problems involving money, the odd one out and finding the highest and lowest scores in a game.
Through applying their Mathematical knowledge and working collaboratively, Year 1 have not only succeeded in finding the solutions, they have also been able to reason and explain how they did it.

We are using reciprocity - Ava
If you count in tens you get 50 - Aaliyah

Investigating Sydney, Australia!

Year Two have been learning lots of facts about Sydney in Australia. They have discovered new information about the city, the people, different animals, weather and have compared this to their own local area of Harold Hill.

"Harold Hill has lots of green in it. I think these are all the parks and fields." Jennifer

"We have lots of things the same- buildings, shops and cars" Peter

The children enjoyed looking at graphs and data to find out which place was the warmest, which had the most people, which was bigger and which was the oldest. They also looked at Google Earth to try and locate Sydney and their school and looked at how they visually differed.

"Sydney has a lot more blue, which is the sea and there's a lot of grey- you can see it is a big city with lots of houses and buildings' Adefolawemi

"On Google Earth, I found the school and even found Miss Hammond's car!" Sophie

Here are some facts the children wrote down about Sydney:

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the widest bridge in the world

It is the 12th most expensive city

There is a tall structure called the Sydney Tower

The Harbour Bridge is known by the locals as "The Coat Hanger" due to its distinct shape

English, Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Greek and Vietnamese are the main languages spoken in Sydney.

Cricket is the most popular summer sport in Sydney

There are lots of different animals, such as, Koala, Kangaroo, Australian Dingo, Wombat, Quoll, Tasmanian Devil, Green Tree Frog, Frilled Neck Lizard.
