Handa's Surprise

One of the books Year One have been reading as part of our safari topic is Handa's Surprise. Handa is a girl who lives in a village in Kenya. We have discussed what life is like for Handa in Kenya and thought about some of the ways it is different to England.
We learned about traditional woven baskets like the one Handa car carries on her head in the story and tried to make our own baskets by weaving paper. We also noticed that Handa's clothes are quite different to the clothes we wear. After seeing photos of traditional African dress the children decided to make their own African necklaces using paper plates.
Fallon Sharpe used her independent learning time to produce a wonderful piece of writing which retold the story. She used the sounds she knows and even used some adjectives to describe the animals in the story!
