Area outside.

After working in class on the area and perimeter of shapes children were today ready to 'go large'.
Children were given a criteria to meet then got to work on creating the shape on the playground. They then successfully found the area and perimeter of each space.
All children demonstrated great concentration and teamwork to use their metre sticks effectively to ensure their measuring was correct as Miss Estall was very strict on accuracy!
Super skills children, well done!

Disgusting Division

After reading the story 'Here come the aliens' year 1 have had to solve some tricky maths problems this week. First we had to use our multiplication and repeated addition skills to help the admiral work out how many spaceships he needed to get to earth. Then we had to use our dividing skills to help the admiral to teach the aliens some table manners and share fairly! The children shared the gruesome alien banquet food and recorded their work for the admiral.

Tesco Visit

Year 2 have had an amazing time exploring Tesco this week and Clover was an excellent guide. The children were made to feel welcome by all members of staff and Tesco's customers were pleased to see so many well behaved children, some even had time to stop and ask the children why they were visiting.

After signing in, we put on our aprons and hats and carefully entered the Bakery. The children learnt that Tesco make over 3,000 bread rolls every day and about 400 loaves of bread. In the Bakery we were allowed to design our own roll. Once created the Baker placed the rolls into a boiling hot oven. We were allowed to watch our rolls being placed in the oven from a safe distance. Even though we were standing away from the oven we could feel the heat.

Next Clover took us to look at the different food counters and we tasted the different cheeses. If you were feeling brave enough  you could try a little fish called an anchovy. The children really enjoyed the taste of the Cheddar and Edam, but Stilton was not so well received. Surprisingly, the anchovies disappeared quickly during the Monday afternoon visit. Although on the Wednesday morning only a few were brave enough to taste the fish.

When we had tasted enough cheese we went to look at the different fish and we tried to name them. We were able to correctly identify the salmon, mussels and prawns. However the mackerel proved more difficult to find and one fish was mistakingly identified as a phirana!

Then we were taken into the back of Tesco to see where the food is stored until it is needed on the shop floor. Clover let us go into the chiller, which is a large fridge. It was cold in there, but not as cold as the freezer. When we went in the freezer we stepped in for a few minutes and then went quickly back out. It was really cold in there!

Before having a rest, we played a game in the produce aisle. We found out that produce is another name for fruits and vegetables. Each team were given a colour of the rainbow and we had to find two fruits or vegetables that were that colour. Amazingly Clover let us take our findings back to class with us.

Just before we returned to school we had a well earned rest in the staffroom. Clover let us have a drink of squash and a piece of hot cross bun. On the way out we were given a bag which had lots of interesting things inside. Everyone especially liked their notebook and weetabix pencil. As we passed the Bakery we stopped to collect our rolls. We had a wonderful time at Tesco and learnt lots of new information about where our food at home comes from.

Some of the Easter eggs Tesco has in stock. Sadly we were not able to bring one back with us.

Science week

Cedar and Cherry Class have enjoyed making 'Sail Cars' for Science week. The children showed fantastic skills of reciprocity when assembling their cars. Attaching the wheels was the trickiest part of the build. Some chose to use masking tape, others chose modelling clay and some tried elastic bands.

Once we had built our sail cars we used wind power to make them move. Unfortunately as we did not have any wind inside we had to make our own wind by blowing down a straw into the sail.

In Cedar Class the winning sail car was Ellie's with Rokas's coming a close second. We found out that wooden wheels were the best for moving the sail cars. Whereas, cardboard wheels did not help the sail car to move at all.

Science Week: Explosive Eruptions!

As part of our Science Week activities the children in Year One have been learning about volcanoes. We learned about the formation of volcanoes and about the hot, molten rock which is called lava.

The children then created their very own volcanic eruption; they worked together to build a 'volcano' out of sand and watched as vinegar mixed with bicarbonate of soda (and some red food colouring!) caused lava to explode from the top of their volcano!

Skipathon for Sport Relief

Year One might have legs that are a little bit too small to run a mile but they still got involved in today's Sport Relief fundraising by taking part in a Skipathon! For an hour this afternoon at least five children from Pine and Mulberry were skipping at any given time in our outside area

.
The children showed fantastic team work and we enjoyed an afternoon in the sun for a fantastic cause.
Ja'Shayla from Pine class was a skipping superstar managing 24 jumps in a row, and Arianna from Mulberry showed great resilience in trying to improve her skipping!
Well done Pine and Mulberry!

The Big Pedal Is Over!

Enormous congratulations and thank you to everyone who cycled or scooted to school over the past two weeks.

I am pleased to announce that within the Greater London area we placed 61st out of 121. This includes schools that are within London and Essex, and as far afield as Surrey, Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

Nationally Broadford Primary School came 602nd out of a massive 1056 schools.

Over the two weeks 23% of our pupils made 951 journeys on bicycles and scooters.

Well done to everyone for choosing a more sustainable mode of travel to school and reducing your carbon footprint.

You should all feel very proud of yourself.

It always seems impossible until it is done.

This is a new record, so every school, pupil, parent and staff member should be really proud.

Look out for Broadford’s results tomorrow. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Mulberry's Making Challenge

Today Mulberry's creative table held a special challenge; to make something as inventive as possible out of a piece of foam. The children were very resourceful and made fantastic use of the materials they have in the classroom to come up with some imaginative creations. Nikola Urban made a delectable-looking purple birthday cake, Lilly Reynolds used her foam to make a bright yellow Easter chick and there were several children who made themselves some rather splendid super hero capes! Well done Mulberry for demonstrating such resourcefulness and creativity.
