Investigating in Numeracy

Mulberry class carried out the following investigation in their Numeracy lesson.

What is the best shape to use to make a lawn for the outside area? How many tiles would be needed to build a border around the different lawn shapes? Which would be the cheapest way?

We used 12 green cubes for the lawn and chose a different colour for the borders. Then we copied our different lawn shape into our books by colouring the squares.

We found out that you nee to use the fewest number of cubes for the border if you arrange the green cubes in a rectangle shape of 3 cubes wide and 4 cubes long.

Learning dribbling skills in PE

Mulberry class have been practicing their dribbling skills in their PE lessons. In this lesson they learned how to do this using hockey sticks.
Keep the ball close to the stick and 'take it for a walk.'

Make sure that you keep two hands on the hockey stick and control the ball carefully.

Then stop the ball and keep it still using your hockey stick. Wait for the signal to go again.

Make sure you place one hand at the top of the stick and one near the bottom.

Now try going a little quicker in and out of the markers.

Finally choose a partner and hit or send the ball to them. Can they receive it, stop it and hit it back?

Fraction Fun in Cedar Class

Cedar Class have been having fun learning about fractions, using brightly coloured icing and mini-smarties. We enjoyed choosing and mixing our own icing sugar for our biscuits, which we spread over the whole of our biscuits. We then divided one biscuit into half and the other into quarters. Some of us even tried to divide our biscuits into thirds, which was very tricky.

Next we used twelve smarties and share these equally between the two halves and with another twelve smarties we shared these between the quarters. We were quickly able to see that half of twelve is six and a quarter of twelve is three. Some of us were able to spot that three quarters of twelve is nine.

Bubble's First Day At Broadford

This afternoon Pine met our class pet Bubbles the fish. He seems to be settling well into life at Broadford and has been happily swimming around in his new tank. Yesterday the children used a Wii game to dive into the coral reef and explore the ocean. Using this and Bubbles to help them, they spent time this morning imagining what life would be like if they were a fish! Here are some examples of their work.

Caitlin's Swimming Success

Caitlin was very proud to show everybody her swimming certificate today. She has been working really hard at the pool and managed to move up to the next level yesterday. Well done Caitlin!

Jacob's Amazing Guitar

Jacob brought in a brilliant home made guitar to show everyone on Friday. He used cardboard, paint and elastic bands to create his masterpiece and had clearly spent lots of time and effort making sure it was perfect. Well done Jacob!

Fun at Broadford Beach

The children had a great time using our new sandpit today. This morning we used the sandpit to solve some tricky multiplication problems by making sandcastle arrays! This afternoon Pine class were busy making dens to read stories, building bubbling volcanoes flowing with lava and even re-creating Ben Nevis. The children worked very well together building and sculpting and were very sensible using the sand.

Pine Class Crack the Code

Pine class had a strange message from the fairies today. They were hidden in a secret location and to find out where we had to use our knowledge of calculations to crack a code. Each correct answer gave us a letter and eventually we found all the letters that spelt the place the fairies were hiding. We practiced using arrays to work out multiplication questions and even though some of the questions were quite tricky the children showed great resilience. Eventually we discovered the fairies hidden under the biggest tree outside!

Tennis coach

Cedar class have been given the opportunity to learn tennis skills with a tennis coach. We had our first lesson last Wednesday, which we all enjoyed. It was hard work and challenging, but we were resilient and we have already started to learn to control of the tennis ball.
