Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 9th Feb 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

“I saw someone put litter on the floor, that is not good!” said Mamadou.

In maths the children revisited patterns in their environment. The children were able to create, continue and correct patterns including ABAB, ABCABC, ABBC and more! The children even extended this to begin giving their pattern a lettered code, one of the earliest forms of algebra, where a letter stands for something else. Wow!

This week, we became eco-warriors! Following in the footsteps of Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough, we headed outside for a very important litter pick. We have been reading ‘10 Things I Can Do To Help My World’, and today we put those words into action by tidying our school environment. We searched high and low for different materials that did not belong on the ground to keep our local wildlife safe. We learned that just like Greta Thunberg, even children can make a huge difference in protecting the Earth!

In PSHE this week, Year 1 enjoyed a lesson called “Our Special People” where we explored the important people in our lives who help, care for and support us. Using a fun balloon activity, the children thought about how special people “lift us up” by helping us feel safe, loved and happy. We discussed different types of families and support networks and how everyone’s family is unique and special. The children shared ideas beautifully and showed great respect when listening to others.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Forest school - Rowan Class

There was lots of excitement as Rowan class had their fire today. We talked about how we start a fire with fuel, heat abs oxygen and practiced the respect position for safety. Everyone had the opportunity to toast a marshmallow over the fire and enjoy it in a brioche bun with a hot chocolate. There was time to look at the new trees planted on site and everyone moved around them carefully so they can grow big and strong. Some children explored the forest school area with the magnify glasses, binoculars and compasses while others made pine cone decorations to take home. It was a lovely final session for Rowan class. There will be back at forest school in the summer.

Year 2 learning blog

This term, we have been exploring plants and their growth. We are now beginning our transition into our new topic, habitats. To kickstart our learning journey, the children went on a nature walk around our local environment. During this walk, they explored different areas, observing closely the plants and animals that live there.

The children really enjoyed this hands-on activity and showed great curiosity and engagement throughout. They are looking forward to many more exciting and interactive experiences like this next term.

Year 1 Planting Cress

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our Year 1 science learning we will be planting cress seeds in class.

To support this activity, we kindly ask if you could send your child into school with a clean, clear, see-through yoghurt pot. This will allow the children to observe the plant as it grows.

Please could the yoghurt pot be brought into school by Monday 23rd February 2026.

Thank you very much for your continued support.

Kind regards,

Ms Nur

Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 2nd Feb 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This week in RE, the children have been exploring Christian beliefs about God’s creation. They enjoyed learning about what Christians believe God created in seven days, from the world around us to all living things. We also discovered three miracles that Jesus performed, discussing what these stories teach us about kindness, helping others, and having faith. The children loved acting out the scenes of the three miracles Jesus performed and enjoyed reflecting on Christian beliefs.

In History we have been learning about the works of Greta Thunberg and Sir David Attenborough. The children engaged in a wonderful lesson exploring the similarities and differences between the two naturalists. They showed understanding of Greta’s activist work and of David’s TV presenting role. The children watched a short yet inspiring clip of a conversation between the two significant people leaving a message of hope for the future of our planet. This topic will tie in nicely with next’s week’s literacy work when the children create their final leaflets providing information about how to ‘save our world’. Below you will see a Venn diagram that Beech class created comparing similarities and differences between their lives, thoughts and work.

This week in Computing, the children explored how technology and creativity can work together. They learned about the artists Henry Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky, focusing on their use of bold colours, shapes and patterns. Using these ideas, the children created their own digital artwork inspired by each artist, experimenting with colour, design and creative expression while developing their computing skills.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Forest School Reminder 🌲

We are looking forward to restarting Forest School next term, and the children are very excited to be heading back outdoors!

To ensure everyone can take part safely and comfortably, please remember that children will need to bring appropriate clothing into school on their Forest School day. This includes wellies, waterproofs, and a full change of clothes. As the weather is still cold, children should also come to school wearing a warm coat.

Forest School takes place in all weathers, and being properly dressed makes a huge difference to the children’s enjoyment and learning. Unfortunately, children who do not have the correct clothing will be unable to take part in the session.

Thank you for your continued cooperation and support — we can’t wait to see the children enjoying their Forest School adventures again!

Miss Harman

Walnut Class Forest School 06/02/26

The children were very excited that we were going to have a fire at Forest School this week. I read them the story ‘Fiery Fox – Learns about Fire Safety’ and we discussed the fire safety rules together. We practised the “respect position” (one knee up and one knee down), as this helps us to stay stable and safe when we are close to the fire.

The children shared what they already knew about fires. I then explained that in order for a fire to burn, three things must be present. If even one of these is missing, the fire will go out. These are:
• Fuel (today this was wood)
• Heat (created using sparks from a flint and steel)
• Oxygen, which we can’t see but is all around us in the air

All the children enjoyed toasting a marshmallow over the fire. They then ate their marshmallow between two chocolate biscuits to make s’mores, along with some tasty hot chocolate.

Since last week’s session, volunteers from Thames Chase have planted 49 new trees on and around the site. There are different varieties, including oak, willow, pine and elder. We talked about how, because they are only saplings, they are not very strong yet and we need to be careful around them.

We finished with a game called “When the Wind Blows.” This was the last session in this block for Walnut Class, but I will be back with them at the beginning of June.
