 Our Orienteering Adventure

Today in Pine Class we spent some time thinking about how people find their way around the world. We began our discussion by sharing different ideas about navigation. The children talked about using maps, asking for directions, recognising landmarks and, of course, using Google Maps on phones and tablets. It was lovely to hear how many of the children had already experienced using maps when travelling with their families.

After our discussion, we explored a more traditional navigation tool – a compass. The children learned that a compass helps us find direction and that the red needle always points to north. We practised holding the compass carefully and keeping it still so that the needle could settle and show us the correct direction. The class enjoyed checking which way was north and then working out where east, south and west would be from there.

Once everyone had a chance to practise using the compasses, we moved on to a fun team challenge. In small groups, the children worked together to create their own simple routes. They used natural materials such as sticks, stones and leaves to make symbols and markers that would guide others along their path. This encouraged lots of teamwork, problem-solving and creativity as the children decided where to place their markers and how to make them clear for others to follow.

Next, the children took part in a digital orienteering activity with the iPads and Miss Float. Using the devices, they followed a set route around the outdoor area, checking the map and moving from one point to the next. The children were very excited to see how technology can help us navigate and enjoyed comparing it with the compass and natural markers they had used earlier.

Finally, the class had some choosing time, where they were able to explore different activities and continue their learning through play. It was wonderful to see them talking about directions, maps and routes while they played.

The children showed great curiosity and teamwork today, and it was fantastic to see them learning different ways we can find our way around – from traditional tools like compasses to modern technology like digital maps.

Well done, Pine Class! 🌿🧭

Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 2nd Mar 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning

In science this week, the children revisited the seeds they planted and explored how their plants have changed over time. They looked carefully at how their plants have grown since they were first planted and talked about the differences they could see. The children were encouraged to describe the changes using the correct vocabulary for the different parts of a plant, such as roots, stem and leaves. This helped them to reflect on the growth of their plants and develop their understanding of how plants change over time.

This week the children have been busy in their Religious Education lesson as we explored how Christians welcome a new baby into their community. The children have been learning the significance of Baptism (Christening) and the special symbols involved in the ceremony. To bring their learning to life, we held our very own 'baptism' ceremonies in the classroom! We practiced using a traditional baptism shell to pour water over the baby's head in our classroom font, learning that this represents a fresh and positive start for the baby.

Year 1 celebrated World Book Day this Thursday by dressing up in either pyjamas or as their favourite book character! The children participated in a number of activities including creating a WBD bookmark and recording a short video of them reciting an extract from ‘Not now Bernard’ which will be made into a compilation video with the whole school!

Apricot Forest School

As it was World Book Day yesterday, today’s session was based on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood. πŸ“•

We began by reading the story together before setting off on our own forest adventure, following a trail that took us from Red Riding Hood’s house all the way to Grandma’s cottage.  The children were very careful not to leave the path as they didn’t want the Big Bad Wolf to gobble them up! 🐺 Along the way, they navigated a series of obstacles, using their balance and coordination to weave through the “forest”. πŸŒ³πŸƒ

To sharpen our listening skills—just like in the line, “Oh, what big ears you have!”—the children wore blindfolds and sat quietly while tuning into the sounds of nature around them. πŸ‘‚

Next, we focused on our looking skills—“Oh, what big eyes you have!”—by taking part in a nature scavenger hunt. Equipped with binoculars and magnifying glasses, the children explored their surroundings, spotting tiny insects and the first signs of spring. πŸ”πŸ‘€πŸžπŸŒΌ

We then enjoyed a healthy snack, just like the treats Red Riding Hood carried in her basket for Grandma. The children tucked into apples, oranges, and bananas. 🍎🍊🍌

We ended the session with a game the children already knew, but with a Red Riding Hood twist. It was a chasing and catching game where four children were the Big Bad Wolves and all the other children were Red Riding Hood.

Year 2 learning blog

This week we celebrated World Book Day, and it was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share their love of reading. The children were very excited to come to school dressed as their favourite book characters, and it was wonderful to see so many creative and imaginative costumes. Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of fun activities to celebrate books and stories. One of their favourite activities was designing and creating their own colourful bookmarks to use when reading their favourite books. The classroom was filled with excitement as the children talked about the stories they enjoy and the characters they admire. It was a lovely day that encouraged everyone to develop an even greater love for reading and storytelling.

Year 2 DT resources

 Dear Parents and Carers,

Next week in Year 2 the children will be designing and making their own free-standing chairs as part of our learning. To help with this project, we would greatly appreciate any spare materials you may have at home.

We are looking for items such as:

  • Cardboard boxes (any size)

  • Cardboard tubes/rolls (e.g. kitchen roll or wrapping paper tubes)

  • Drinking straws

  • Small packaging materials or other clean recyclable materials that could help with building and strengthening structures

If you have any of these items, please could you send them in with your child on Monday or Tuesday.

Thank you very much for your support — the children are very excited to get started with their designs!

Kind regards,
Year 2 Team

Pine forest school

Pine class were very pleased to see the sun shining today. We continued to think a bit about trees and made ground pictures of trees noticing the different shapes of the trees. We hunted for things we love in nature with our heart shaped finders and looked at spiders, ladybirds, the sky and worms. Some of us played the ‘Go find it’ game fo ding things that are soft (mud), green (grass) and thin (sticks). A packed morning. Thanks to all those who remembers their wellies.

Apricot Forest School

Apricot Class had a lovely return to their Forest School sessions,

with our theme focusing on Animals in Nature. The children

were full of enthusiasm and shared ideas about animals they

might find in the wild in England, including rabbits, squirrels

and foxes. 🦊🐿️πŸ‡

One activity involved using clay and natural materials,

such as leaves and sticks, to create woodland creatures.

The children showed great creativity, making a range of

animals including a butterfly and a bat. πŸƒπŸ¦‡

I also brought soft toy birds, including a blackbird, a

chaffinch and a pigeon. The children enjoyed building nests

for them using natural materials they found on the ground,

showing care and thought in their creations. πŸͺΉπŸ¦

The children also noticed the green tubes around the site

and learned that these protect newly planted saplings.

They enjoyed looking inside and spotting buds, noticing

the first signs that spring is on its way. 🌱✨

Year 1: What We Are Learning W/C 24th Feb 2026

Year 1: What We Are Learning
This week, our Year 1 students had a fantastic time participating in a skipping workshop. It was wonderful to see the children building on the foundations they laid during PE back in September. They showed great perseverance and eagerness to improve their skills. Their coordination and confidence have grown so much, and everyone approached the challenge with a smile!

In Literacy we have been learning about how

to plan and write a persuasive letter.

The children are keen to bake some cakes but

need some money to buy the ingredients.

They have worked well this week to focus on

writing a persuasive letter to Mrs Nicholls

asking for £1 each towards the cost. Their letters

started with ‘Dear…’ and were signed

off with ‘From…’. They then used green pens

for any corrections; in the photo you can

see Nathan modelling this.

In Geography, Year 1 has been focusing on England and
its capital city, London. As part of our learning,
the children retold the story of a bear visiting some
of London’s most famous landmarks. They enjoyed
learning about and describing well known sights
such as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Tower Bridge
and the London Eye. Through stories, maps and
discussions the children have been developing their
understanding of capital cities, landmarks and
what makes each place special.

Well done Year 1 for an amazing week - keep up all your brilliant work!

Year 2 Learning blog

This term in Literacy, we are travelling back in time to 1666 to explore the Great Fire of London through the eyes of Vlad the flea!

This week, we enjoyed our very first reading of the story and the children worked incredibly hard to remember key facts about the events of 1666. We discussed where and how the fire started, how it spread so quickly through London’s wooden houses, and how people tried to stop it.

To help bring the story to life, we immersed ourselves in the events through role play. The children took on different roles from the book, acting out important moments and thinking carefully about how the characters might have felt during such a dramatic time. This hands-on experience has helped deepen their understanding of the story and the historical event behind it.Our drama and discussion work will strongly support our writing throughout the term.

We are very much looking forward to seeing their ideas and creativity shine in their upcoming writing!

Year 2 Trip - Tuesday 24th March 2026

Year 2 Holy Redeemer Church TripHome - The Most Holy Redeemer Church & St Dominic's Church

Tuesday 24th February 2026

Dear Parents/ Carers,

Year 2 Holy Redeemer Church Trip :

On Tuesday 24th March, Year 2 pupils will be visiting the Most Holy Redeemer Church, Harold Hill. Year 2 children are visiting Most Holy Redeemer Church to help them learn more about Christianity and places of worship. During the trip, they will explore the church building and find out about special features such as the altar, font and stained glass windows. This visit will support their Religious Education lessons and help them understand why the church is an important and special place for Christians.

On the day of the trip, children need to arrive in the morning at normal school time (8.30am) and will be returning to school before lunch.

Children should wear normal school uniform (with comfortable shoes). It will be a short trip so children can have their normal packed lunch/ school dinners at school when they return.
