2023 Year 1 Summer1 Curriculum Letter

                      24th April 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year One - Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back and we hope you have had a wonderful  Easter  break. We hope you find this letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions relating to the curriculum @ year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

  • 15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record

  • 15 minutes practicing spellings

  • 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

  • If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have our weekly math challenge which can be found in the Year 1/2 blog page.

We are also sending home a weekly phonics screening check materials for children to practise with their parents at home as the test is just a few weeks away.

Spellings:

The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.

Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.

105 Reading Books Year 1

Please ensure you complete your child’s tracker and return to their class teacher. New copies of the tracker have been sent home. Please request a new tracker if needed. year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Trips/Visits/Experiences

  • As part of our Religious Education Unit on what a Church means to Christains, we  will be visiting St Andrew’s Church, Hornchurch  between 17th May, 2023 and  19th May, 2023. The church is only able to accommodate 30 children at a time, so we will be visiting the church on three different days . However,  this is subject to the provision of free tickets by Transport for London. We have made an application for free bus tickets and we are awaiting their response.  Also, we have booked a skipping workshop for Wednesday, 24th May 2023. Further information to be sent closer to the date.

Curriculum Information

  • We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please email us at year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Yours sincerely,
