A great week in Year 1. The year 1 team is so impressed with how all your children are working. What a HUGE difference we can see already. The children are now completing more complex literacy lessons, which also include them getting into different characters and discussing how they would feel in different scenarios. Year 1 has also had a focus on the Zones of regulation in PSHE. This helps children to understand their own emotions and for them to know that all emotions are ‘okay’. Even if they are in the red zone! Please continue to keep up the reading and sign your child's Reading record.
Literacy
This week the children are reading The Queen's handbag. The children completed research on a variety of different London Landmarks. Once they had collected the information they used this to write their findings. The children enjoyed finding out about all the different sights and it was nice to get feedback from the children who had visited them. They were especially impressed with how many bathrooms Buckingham palace has .
Next week, we are going to be starting The Snail and the Whale. The children are going to be writing Fact files about snails.
Maths
This week Year 1 has been learning about Tens and Ones. The children have been separating the numbers into how many tens and one in each number. For example for the number 42, the children would recognise that there are 4 tens and 2 ones. They have used number squares and dienes to represent this.
Next Week, the children will be continuing to practise numbers up to 50. They are going to get more experience with larger numbers.
Topic
Geography
This term the children are going to be learning all about the seasons and weather. The first lesson was finding out what the children knew about the weather. They completed a worksheet with the weather signs. They were also asked to complete a little task by going home and asking an adult to watch the news. How many signs did the children recognise?
Science
Animals have filled the classroom this week as the children have been learning how to characterise different animals. Children have been learning why Animals are Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds and Fish. Year 1 completed a cutting and sticking activity putting the animals into the correct category.
You can remind the children at home with this song!

World Book Day
World Book Day was great and the children came in with Fantastic costumes. During World Book Day the children had the opportunity to meet the Author Natalie Newman who read her published book Lark the Shark and Wonder the Whale. (The story fitted fantastically with our science topic too!)
