Year 1 - What we are learning

Year 1 has worked well this week on some challenging learning. As they continue to grow in Year 1 they are getting more complex lessons and they are doing so well with the new challenges.

We would like to Thank all the adults that came to our Stay and play session this week. We hope  it was informative and you are gaining a clear understanding of how we teach reading and how important it is to read to the children as much as possible. If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of the Year 1 team.

Literacy

Discussions have been had in Year 1 this week. The children had a question to answer.

‘Do you think it is a good idea for the Snail to go with the whale?’

The children had discussions on if it is a good idea for the snail to go with the Whale who he doesn't know. We may have some politicians in the near future. Children were putting their points across and commenting on other children's ideas. The language used was fantastic and it was such a delight to see all the children taking part.

The children then completed Persuasive sentences given their reasons for both going with the Whale or staying. It was a challenging piece of writing but the children completed them well.

‘ I think the snail should go with the Whale because it can save the Snail when he is lost’. - Zara (Apricot)

‘ I don't think it is a good idea to go with the Whale because he could trick the snail and then when they are swimming he might flick the snail off’.- Jace (Apricot)

‘ If the Whale didn’t come to get the whale, then that means that the Snail will have to slide onto a boat and it will take forever to get anywhere’. - Iustin (Apricot)

‘

In Beech class the children described the setting of the beach in Snail and the Whale. The children used lots of amazing adjectives to describe the setting.

Ameera “The sand is golden and yellow”.

Wais “The volcano is hot and scary”.

Ikveera “The ocean is blue and wavy”.

Stay and Learn

Thank you to all the parents that came to our stay and learn session. It was so nice to see so many adults come and read with the children. We hope you enjoyed spending time in your children’s classroom and seeing a snippet of how we teach your lovely children.

Maths

In Math this week we have been focusing on Length and Height. We looked at the differences between the both and the children had fun measuring each other and trying to see who is the tallest and shortest  in the class.  We are promoting mathematical language when teaching, using tallest and shortest.

Topic

RE

Over the next few weeks, the children are going to be learning about the Easter story and why it is a special holiday for Christians. This week the children were told the Easter story and what happened on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The children are taking a great interest in the story but also having conversation about what are good choices and bad.
