Dear Parents and Carers,
Year One - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back to a new school year. We are so excited to have the children back and embrace the ‘new normal’. We have had a fantastic first week getting to know the children and are so proud of the way they have adapted to Year One.
We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher by email if you have any questions regarding Year One. (year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk)
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
· 15 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record
· 15 minutes practicing spellings
· rehearsing times tables facts (2x, 5x and 10x tables)
Spellings:
The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently). Please practise these spellings with your child each night.
Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.
Trips and important dates
Unfortunately, because of Covid, we are unable to book our autumn term trips. We are instead looking to bring in workshops where possible and set up ‘experience days’ for the children.
Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please get in touch through our Year One email . We welcome any suggestions you may have.
Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chappel Miss Ahmed Miss Tuffley

Focus Text | Beegu |
Literacy | Children will be using the focus text; Beegu to develop important writing skills. The children will be working on descriptive writing, labeling and sequencing. Some skills we will focus on this half term will be: -Using phonic knowledge to identify the sounds in unfamiliar words -Begin to use full stops and capital letters correctly -Read their writing out loud to ensure it makes sense |
Reading- phonics
Children will be assessed and grouped across the year group according to their needs for the teaching of Read, Write, Inc our phonics scheme. It is really important children have a good phonic knowledge and learn to be fluent readers this half term. We will revise Set 1 sounds and Set 2 in class. Please practice reading regularly with your child, this will help them to access the whole curriculum. https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources This is a good website with a variety of games to practice phonics skills. If you want more information on the best level to start with your child.
