Year One Reading
We are very excited to launch our new reading plan for our Year 1 children.
This will be similar to the reading experience the children have had in Reception with the addition
of new phonic story books which will match your child’s reading level.
On your child’s reading day they will bring home a real story book, a Read, Write, Inc. book
that they have already read or will soon be reading in school, and one of new story books which they
will use their reading skills to decode (sound out) with you at home. These books will all go home in a
folder and the children should bring them back to school on their reading day to read to their teacher and have
their books changed.
It is very important that these books are kept together in the reading folder we will provide and are all returned to us.
How to help at home
The first time your child reads a story they may need to sound out lots of words.
You can help them if they are stuck by sounding out the word they are stuck on e.g. ‘c,r,a,b’ or ‘c,ar,t.’
The second and third time your child reads encourage them to say the words they know if they do not need to
sound them out to increase the speed of their reading.
To improve your child’s comprehension you can discuss and compare key moments in the story, answer
questions about the story and encourage them to read the story with a storyteller’s voice. The books have
questions and guides at the back to help you to do this.

Our aim is for the children to read with fluency and expression. To do this they need need to read stories
more than once. They will not be expected to read 3 books in one night but should read their books a few
times during the week to increase their fluency.

Look out for our video guide which will show a teacher modelling reading the phonic
books with the children. If you have any questions regarding your child’s reading please speak to your child’s
teacher and they will be able to advise you.
Yours Faithfully,

Year 1 Team
