Year 2 Sculpture Workshop!

Year 2 Sculpture Workshop

The sculpture man, Darcy, was back in Year 2 and this year, to coincide with our space topic, the children worked on building a rocket!

They had to use their listening skills to remember all the steps;

1. Get eight sheets of newspaper

2. Fold and roll the newspaper making sure the bottom sheet sticks out

3. Place the roll in a Newspaper Roller and cover it with glue

4. Spin the roller and press down firmly to turn the roll into a very hard stick.

By using cable ties with their partner they attached the sticks together, to make longer rods. These rods got attached to a scaffold using more cable ties, which they tightened with special tools (those were tricky to use!)

"Turning the paper roller is hard work, but if you turn it quickly then you make a really good stick!" Gabriela

The children needed to practice effective reciprocity, resilience and resourcefulness as they came up against the challenges of using the new tools. They helped one another, and found ways of tackling a problem. For example, if a stick didn't seem to be rolling tightly, some children found that adding more glue helped it along!

"This machine is amazing! It makes the paper so hard, because of all the layers!" - Harry

                                    The rocket nears completion (look at those busy workers)!

Over the course of the day the structure came together, and our rocket emerged!

3...2....1..... Lift off!

Until next year!

"My zip-tie is too loose, so my rod won't stay together. I need to use the zip-tie gun again!" Lucas
