'Eggsperimenting' in Year 2!

Year 2 have been collaboratively working on a series of experiments using eggs over the course of the last week. They have been looking at the density of a liquid and discussing how to make an egg float, rather than sink, in water. They discovered salt helps to make the tap water more dense and this causes the egg to float.

They have also been investigating how to make an egg see through, using vinegar. The vinegar makes the shell slowly dissolve because it breaks apart the solid calcium carbonate crystals that make up the eggshell into their calcium and carbonate parts. After a few days the egg looks translucent and can be gently squashed, giving it a bouncy appearance.

The children have also enjoyed seeing other egg experiments and tricks!
Egg Tricks

"The egg went from sinking to the bottom to floating at the top because we used salt to make the water dense!" Malachi
"The shell has been changing colour" Nathan
"Eggs have lots of uses, they are versatile!" Adefolawemi

Year 2 Star Writers

A huge well done to Ellie Wise and Finley Hudson who are Star writers this week!

Finley has written a brilliant monologue as Jerome the Gnome portraying his shock and anger after being sold at a boot-sale. He used showing sentences to show the reader how he was feeling without actually telling them.

"You don't always actually need to say he's mad, I can show you by what he says." Finley

Ellie has written a diary entry as an astronaut in Space and included a number of adjectives to describe where she is and how she was feeling.

"I thought you be really lonely on another planet so that's why I said about him being scared" Ellie

Year 1’s Hanger Scales

Year 1’s Hanger Scales

This week Year 1 made their very own balance scales in the outside area.  They used a hanger and attached string and cups to make the scales.  The children then went around and found different objects to weigh outside.  They were able to say if the objects were heavier, lighter or balanced.

"The pencil is lighter than the pen." - Layla-Rose
"The gem is heavier than the bottle top." - Tiffany

Paying Tribute to Stephen Hawking in Year 2

Paying Tribute to Stephen Hawking

Yesterday, the world of science lost a brilliant mind. In the spirit of Science Week, we decided to learn a bit about Stephen Hawking.

The children discussed how he showed incredible resilience, and never stopped trying. They also learned a bit about how Stephen Hawking helped us understand more about black holes.

The class showed great compassion and understanding as they discussed what they might do if they had to try and overcome the barriers of a difficult disease, and as they talked about how technology can help us.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.” - Stephen Hawking

World Record Attempts!!

Today we had a surprise guest at Broadford School, in order to help us celebrate Science Week!! Robin Ince (best known for presenting 'The Infinite Monkey Cage' with physicist Brian Cox) gave us a visit as part of our challenges with 'Guiness World Records'. Year 4 volunteers worked with Robin Ince to perform some hands on science tests and attempt to recreate and beat a few world records!

This was also filmed for Guiness World Records and so the children got to see what a real film set looked like. Sycamore was transformed by a whole film crew and the children even had their own microphones, just like they have seen on TV.

Our budding scientists from Year 4 were incredibly enthusiastic and were overjoyed to attempt to beat world records, such as, the loudest scream and the loudest burp! It sounded like Adam had been practising for this very record!!

Did you know the loudest scream belongs to a teacher (Annalisa Flanagan), with 121 decibels- the equivalent of a jet engine! The children each attempted to beat the record and our closest was Sophia who got to 110! The children attempted a few other records and also had fun exploring how to recreate the stinkiest plant in the world... all under the comedic tuition of Mr Ince.

Here are some behind the scene photos as the children got prepared to make their big film debut and attempt some world records! We cannot wait to see the final film and our Broadford film stars! Thank you to Guiness World Records for the exciting challenges to help us celebrate Science week.

"The smelliest plant is the corpse plant- Amorphophallus titanum" Adam
"The children were fantastic, they showed such enthusiasm and collaboration. They really worked well together and were not afraid to take on the tasks given to them" Robin Ince

KS1 Science Show Fun!!

Today the children were very excited to meet a mad scientist who taught them lots of exciting scientific facts! The children learned about forces and could use terms such as 'gravity' 'push/pull' 'friction'. They also learned about the theories of  Isaac Newton and his impact on scientific thought.

Later, they were astonished to watch children whizz round the hall on a hover board and they enjoyed helping out with each of the experiments.

'Friction is a force between two objects like the heat you feel between your hands when you rub them together' Kanishka
'Air resistance is friction, we saw it keep the balls in the air' David
'The air helped the board hover off the floor and float around' Maisie
'I really liked the experiments they were so much fun!' Ellie
'The scientist was so funny!' Chris

Portrait of Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton is considered one of the most important scientists in history. Even Albert Einstein said that Isaac Newton was the smartest person that ever lived. During his lifetime Newton developed the theory of gravity, the laws of motion (which became the basis for physics), a new type of mathematics called calculus, and made breakthroughs in the area of optics such as the reflecting telescope.

Year 2 Sculpture Workshop!

Year 2 Sculpture Workshop

The sculpture man, Darcy, was back in Year 2 and this year, to coincide with our space topic, the children worked on building a rocket!

They had to use their listening skills to remember all the steps;

1. Get eight sheets of newspaper

2. Fold and roll the newspaper making sure the bottom sheet sticks out

3. Place the roll in a Newspaper Roller and cover it with glue

4. Spin the roller and press down firmly to turn the roll into a very hard stick.

By using cable ties with their partner they attached the sticks together, to make longer rods. These rods got attached to a scaffold using more cable ties, which they tightened with special tools (those were tricky to use!)

"Turning the paper roller is hard work, but if you turn it quickly then you make a really good stick!" Gabriela

The children needed to practice effective reciprocity, resilience and resourcefulness as they came up against the challenges of using the new tools. They helped one another, and found ways of tackling a problem. For example, if a stick didn't seem to be rolling tightly, some children found that adding more glue helped it along!

"This machine is amazing! It makes the paper so hard, because of all the layers!" - Harry

The rocket nears completion (look at those busy workers)!

Over the course of the day the structure came together, and our rocket emerged!

3...2....1..... Lift off!

Until next year!

"My zip-tie is too loose, so my rod won't stay together. I need to use the zip-tie gun again!" Lucas

Year 2 Parent Workshop

Next week, we will be hosting an open morning for Year 2 parents which will be focused on how to further support your children at home.
Parental feedback overwhelmingly indicated that Maths and reading comprehension was the area that you would like further guidance when supporting your children. Therefore, we have provided this opportunity for you to speak with the Year 2 teachers regarding maths teaching and ideas to support comprehension.
Tea and coffee will be provided at 9am in the hall on Tuesday, followed by a short, informal, session with the Year 2 teachers to discuss mathematical methods taught and a chance for you to ask any further questions.
We will also be answering questions regarding the end of Key Stage Assessments (SATs) which many of you have been asking about.
We look forward to seeing you!

What A Woman!

Today, celebrates International women's day so we have been celebrating and speaking about all the wonderful women in the world that have achieved brilliant things, including the ladies in our own lives!

In relation to this, Temilola has brought in some amazing information about a truly inspirational woman - Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh. She was a Doctor in Nigeria who prevented an outbreak of Ebola by insisting an ill patient who entered the country was isolated. Although he and others resisted; she did not back down to them. Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh vehemently refused a request to release the patient to fly home. As a result of these actions, she prevented a possibly deadly Ebola outbreak.  However during the process she sadly contracted the virus herself and later died.

"She was a hero, she saved so many people." Temilola.

Year 2 get messy making the solar system!

This week, as part of our topic, the children have been making the planets out of paper mache! Many of them were excited to get their hands messy! The children will be undertaking a project about the solar system. They will be learning lots of space facts, discovering what it takes to be an astronaut and researching each of the planets.

Here are some of the children working in collaboration to make 'Mars'

Here are a few facts to get you started:

1) One million Earths could fit inside the sun – and the sun is considered an average-size star.

2) For years it was believed that Earth was the only planet in our solar system with liquid water. More recently, NASA revealed its strongest evidence yet that there is intermittent running water on Mars, too!

3) Comets are leftovers from the creation of our solar system about 4.5 billion years ago – they consist of sand, ice and carbon dioxide.

4) You wouldn’t be able to walk on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus or Neptune because they have no solid surface!

5) If you could fly a plane to Pluto, the trip would take more than 800 years!

6) Scientists estimate there are about 500,000 pieces of space junk today, including fragments from rockets and satellites, and everyday items like spanners dropped during construction of the International Space Station!

7) An asteroid about the size of a car enters Earth’s atmosphere roughly once a year – but it burns up before it reaches us. Phew!

8) The highest mountain known to man is on an asteroid called Vesta. Measuring a whopping 22km in height, it is three times as tall as Mount Everest!

9) There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth. That’s at least a billion trillion!

10) The sunset on Mars appears blue.
