Marooned onTreasure Island

Whilst being marooned on a treasure island, the children in year 1 have been finding out about survival. Week 1, saw the children building shelters that were sustainable against the wind and rain. Week 2, the children had to design and build mini rafts in order to escape. They needed to test their rafts to see if they would float and how much weight they could hold. This week, the children have been discussing which foods they could find on the island. Some very sensible suggestions included coconut/coconut milk, berries and various fruits plus catching your own fish. We thought this was the perfect time to introduce some new foods; blueberries, passion fruit, Sharon fruit, mangoes and grapefruit. As the children suggested some great words to describe the fruits, they were encouraged to build up their own word bank to use in the writing area. Words included; scrumptious, slimy, slippery, squashy, mushy, juicy, bitter, sour, sharp, revolting, disgusting.
