Year 1- What we are Learning 16-6-23

The Year 1 team are extremely proud of the children this week. The children have worked so hard on their phonics screening checks and it is fantastic to see how they have progressed throughout the year. Not only have the children been completing Phonics but they have also been working hard on these very hot days. We ask the children to drink as much water as possible but if the temperature increase then the timings of the children playing outside will be changed.

Thank you to all those parents who are weekly readers and bringing the books back on the correct days. We would also like to Thank all the parents that put in the time to practice the children's spellings. It all helps the children become fantastic readers and writers.

Literacy

How do we make a cake and what do we need?

This week the children have written a list of instructions on how to make a cake. They completed the writing really well. They are all getting very excited on what toppings they are going to buy from the shop next week,

Maths

This week in Math's we are  working on numbers larger than 20. We set the children a challenge to find the tens and ones in a number by using the Dienes. They  completed the challenge brilliantly. Apricot Class even asked for number 106! Which the children were very proud to show and share that they needed 10 tens and 6 ones.

History

Our new Topic this term is Homes. The children will be learning about different homes throughout the years. This week children were asked  what they wanted to find out. We had some very insightful questions and children used questions marks at the end of each sentence.

Science

In science this week, Year 1 went on a flower hunt to spot what different flowers we have around school. This term we will be looking a plants and the different features they have. It was great to hear so many insightful questions about why Bees love flowers and Do all flowers need the same to grow?
