This Week's Learning in Year 1

This Week's Learning in Year 1

 Literacy

In Literacy this week we have been following the journey of recycling when it is put out on the curb in the orange bags. The children were fascinated with the process of where it went and how it was used.
The children then wrote about this process in their books, using picture prompts to help encourage independence.

Maths
This week in Maths we have been looking at making equal groups and arrays. Arrays are a visual or practical (cubes) way of representing multiplication. See example picture:

The children have been making arrays using cubes and drawing pictures of them in their books. Next week we will be focusing on doubling.

History
This week in History we have been continuing with the Tudors. We have been comparing life now to life in Tudor times. We baked some bread using a Tudor recipe and a modern day recipe and really enjoyed getting stuck in with the baking. After, we compared the finished products. Almost all of us preferred the taste of the modern day bread, we thought it was very strange that the Tudor recipe contained black treacle!

Science

We are continuing to explore materials and their properties. This week the children used recycling to create new objects. Some were games, some were toys and some were just creative pieces of art. The children spoke about different properties of the materials e.g- water proof, strong, bendy, soft, hard. We then took a proto of them with their creation and printed it out for the children to label.

Many thanks

Planting In Year 2

Planting In Year 2

In Science, we have been looking at plants. Last week, we planted some beans using 'hydroponics'. The children enjoyed creating their green house using zip lock bags and have been watching how their beans change each day.

We discussed what conditions plants need to grow and have been practicing using the correct vocabulary for the different parts of the plants.

After observing the plants all week, we noticed that they were soon outgrowing their bags! We decided to plant some outside so that we could continue to watch them grow. Some children even decided to measure their bean plants and drew tables to keep track of how much taller they grow each week. A great way to practice measuring in standard units!

Year 2 will be professional gardeners in no time! Keep a look out for some more of our science activities this half term.

Year 1- Week 1 Learning

Week 1- Welcome back!

Hello!

We have loved being back this week and getting stuck straight into our learning.

Literacy

We have started a new topic based around the book called, 10 things I can do to help my world.

The book has prompted lots of interesting discussions about what we do and the things we could change. The children have been do some writing about what they do to help the environment.

In literacy next week we are looking at what happens to our recycling when we put it in our orange sacks and leave it out on the pavement ready for collection.

Maths

This week we have been have been practising our 2, 5 and 10 time tables. We have also begun to look at multiplication, grouping equal amounts and adding the groups together.

In maths next week we are looking at arrays and how to show our working out by drawing arrays.

Science

We are linking science in with out book '10 things I can do to help my world' and we are looking at materials. We started by sorting and classifying them into categories such as; plastic, paper, mental, wood. Then the children discovered that some objects were made from more than one material. We then used a Venn diagram to dort the objects, looking closely at all the materials it was made from.

In science next week we are looking at how to just at least 3 different materials to make something new. We will be naming the materials and discussing the properties of them.

History

In History next week we are following a Tudor recipe and making Tudor style bread, We will discuss how the Tudors would cook bread and how we now cook bread and why.

Outdoors

As part of our wider school plan to plant more flowers and vegetables in the school grounds, Year 1 have planted lots of flowers and vegetables this week. We look forward to taking care of them and watching them grow.

Have a great weekend!
