Learning about 1066

The children have been learning about the year 1066 in history lessons. After the death of Edward the confessor, our country needed a new king! The children have researched the options and they had a vote for who they would like- they chose William of Normandy. Unfortunately for our class, the next king would be Harold Godwinson. The children have also learned about the key battles in 1066- the battle of Stamford bridge and Hastings. Eventually, William of Normandy does become king after he kills Harold Godwinson. He is then known as William the conqueror!
As a celebration, the women in Williams court had a tapestry made to show how he came to be king of England. This was known as the Bayeax tapestry. The class enjoyed seeing ‘scenes’ from this and working out what happened in the battle of Hastings. Later the class worked together to create their own modern version of the key parts of the year 1066. They did an incredible job- what a wonderful piece of art! Have a look and test your own knowledge- can you put the pictures in order? Ask your children for the answers- they will be able to tell you all about the kings and what happened at the battles!

'Harald Hardrada was a Viking!' Nathan
'They did a lot of fighting in 1066' Riley
'They had to build a lot of castles to protect themselves because lots of people were trying to become King' Tyler
