The children in Year 2 recently had an extremely valuable lesson in cycling when they were visited by two cycle awareness experts. The focus was not just to teach the children how to ride a bike but how to ride safely and how to keep control.
First, they rode their bikes and scooters around various obstacles which required slow and steady movements. The children were encouraged to use their brakes and not merely their feet as a means of control.
In addition to this, they learnt many fundamental rules when riding on public streets such as:
- always stop at listen when approaching roads.
- walk along side the bike when crossing.
- never cross a road when the view is restricted, for example, between cars.
- always wear a helmet which fits.
- always wear high visibility clothing.
Learning how to correctly fit a helmet.
