Mulberry Forest School - Summer Term

  

Mulberry Class (Year 2 ) -  Forest School

 

Mulberry class will begin their second block of forest school lessons on Monday 13th April 2025 for five weeks.

The sessions will be on 13.4, 20.4, 27.4, 8.4 and 11.4. 

Please ensure your child has the correct clothing in school in order to participate. Feel free to start brining in their named forest school clothing now so it is ready for when we begin the sessions. If children do not have the correct clothing, they will not be able to participate. 

Please find below a leaflet that explains/reminds you of what Forest School is all about.

The children will need: 

Waterproof coat (with a hood) – essential in all seasons

Jumper or fleece and Polo Shirt – for warmth in cold months

Base layer - if it's very cold an extra thin layer under your polo shirt. 

Polo Shirt - in warmer months

A spare pare of long trousers (ideally waterproof)  – preferably old or outdoor-specific - essential in all seasons

Waterproof trousers (especially in winter or muddy months)

Sturdy trainers, walking boots or wellies – depending on the weather/terrain

Thick socks (double socks if cold)

Hat, gloves and snood – in cold months

Sun hat, sunscreen & insect repellent – in warmer months

Please note that the boots, waterproofs and warm trousers will be kept in school until the five sessions are over. 

Forest School sessions take place whatever the weather, so it is important the children are properly dressed, so that they can participate in and enjoy each session fully.

Pine forest school

 

Pine Class had a busy and exciting morning today. Everyone had the opportunity to light their own mini fire, showing great persistence and resilience while encouraging one another along the way. The children made sure they were in the correct position when lighting their fires and followed the safety guidance carefully.

There was also time for some creativity, as the children transformed themselves into “forest people” using natural materials they found around the site, along with some petals that Alison Ant kindly brought from home.

It has been wonderful to see the children’s confidence and teamwork grow during these sessions. We are looking forward to our final session next week!

Year 1: What We Are Learning

This week in DT, the children have been busy designing custom felt hand puppets based on the Zones of Regulation. By choosing a specific zone (blue, green, yellow, or red) students are exploring how different emotions look and feel. These puppets will serve as a creative way for them to further understand self-regulation and identifying their emotions. 

In Literacy this week, we have been learning about how to write instructions to make a cake. The children first gave specific instructions for their teacher to make a jam sandwich. Later in the week they watched a short video of a young boy explaining step-by-step how to make a cake. The children used this information to write the method using time adverbials such as: first, next, after that, then, and finally. As part of the project, the children also took a trip to Lidl to buy their cake decorations.

In Geography, Year 1 pupils learned about Northern Ireland and its capital city, Belfast. They wrote key facts about Northern Ireland, including one famous landmark in Belfast, local food and the weather. Pupils also practiced locating Northern Ireland and Belfast on a map of the UK and describing the weather.

Year 2 Learning blog

 

This week in Year 2 we celebrated Science Week, and the theme was curiosity. The children explored lots of exciting ideas and asked many thoughtful questions about the world around them.

We started the week by watching a brilliant science experiment. One of the teachers demonstrated “elephant toothpaste.” The children loved seeing the huge foamy reaction and we talked about how scientists sometimes carry out experiments to understand how different materials react with each other. It was a fantastic way to spark curiosity and excitement for science.

Later in the week, the children investigated fruits and vegetables. We looked carefully at different foods and discussed where they might come from. The class shared their ideas about farms, gardens, and shops. We also thought about how foods look and whether their appearance might affect how we think they taste. The children enjoyed discussing their favourite fruits and vegetables and thinking like young scientists by observing and asking questions.

To finish the week, we reflected on our childhood and what makes it positive. The children thought about the things that help them feel happy, safe, and excited to learn. They then created their own posters to share their ideas. The posters included drawings, words, and colourful designs showing what makes childhood special.

It has been a wonderful week full of curiosity, discussion, and creativity. The children showed fantastic enthusiasm and asked some brilliant scientific questions. Well done, Year 2!

Year 1 Trip to St George's Church - Wednesday 22nd April 2026

Dear Parents/ Carers, 

Year 1 St George’s Church Trip : 

On Wednesday 22nd April, Year 1 pupils will be visiting St George’s Church, Harold Hill. Year 1 children are visiting St George’s Church to help them learn more about Christianity and places of worship. During the trip, they will explore the church building and find out about special features such as the altar, font and stained glass windows. This visit will support their Religious Education lessons and help them understand why the church is an important and special place for Christians.

On the day of the trip, children need to arrive in the morning at normal school time (8.30am) and will be collected at the end of the day. The classes will be going at different times during the day but will be in school for lunch. 

Children should wear normal school uniform (with comfortable shoes).
