Fire Safety In Cherry Class

Last week in Year 2 the children had a very important lesson. The were visited by a local Fireman who spoke to them about Fire safety at home.

 

It came to our attention that whilst we regularly speak of what to do in the event of a fire at School, many children were not as sure what to do should this ever  happen at home. Luckily, this is not the case any longer!

 

First, the children identified a number of fire hazards around the home and discussed how they can be avoided. This included overloaded sockets, the use of candles and leaving cooking unattended. They were reminded to call 999 in the event of an emergency but also spoke about scenarios of when this number should and shouldn't be used.

 

They were then taught about their fire plan at home. They were taught to feel a door handle with the back of their hand if they hear the spoke alarm and NOT to open the door if it is hot. They learned that they should put bed covers/towels at the seal of the door to prevent smoke entering and to go to the window and shout for help.

 

The children are now confident explaining their fire plan at home and were encouraged to bring this information home to share with their families. Please ask your children about this and reinforce your fire plan and don't forget to check your smoke alarms every week!

 

If you do not have a smoke alarm then please make this priority over the Easter holidays.

Year 2 Tackle The Tent!

Over the course of the Spring term the children in Year 2 have been developing their reciprocity skills to put up a tent. They had access to the tent at all times in the outdoor area and were allowed to put it up and take it down as many times as they wanted, the only catch was that they were not allowed any help from an adult...

 

At first, as you could imagine, the children found this very difficult. They found it hard to work as a team and were reluctant to use the instructions. They wanted the easy way out and begged for help!

 

"Oh please just show us Mrs Smith!" they pleaded.

 

However, the adults had to stay true to their word and ensure they did not tell the children what to do. Therefore, the children realised that if they wanted to play in the tent; they needed to keep trying! Slowly, the children began to figure out how to follow the instructions and put their heads together to work out a system. After a few gruelling weeks, the first group of children were successful!

 

"We did it!" shouted the very excited group.

 

After this, there was no stopping them! Triumphantly, over the weeks, different groups of children managed to put the tent up without an ounce of adult support. In fact, many didn't need the instructions and were able to do it from memory!

 

It was great to observe such high levels of engagement and determination in the children which ultimately led to their success. This challenge enabled the children to develop their ability to work effectively in a group and also meant they were better at following written instructions.

 

We're all going on an EASTER EGG HUNT!!

On our last afternoon before the holidays, the children of Year One took part in an Easter Egg Hunt! The children were thrilled and extremely excited as they ran about outside looking for those hidden eggs. Some were found hanging from trees and others were found by digging in the sand pit. As soon as the children found an egg they could trade them in for a chocolate or a secret prize. What an enjoyable afternoon.

Last week of Spring Term for Year One!

What an exciting end to the last term for Year One! We were literally jam packed with activities and trips! Here are a selection of photos from our last week where we held an Easter Egg Hunt, visited the Dr Seuss exhibition in Stratford, made our own healthy juices on the back of a bike and made Easter cards/ chicks. Our classes were transformed ready for Easter celebrations- including Easter baking with Miss Hamilton, an Easter themed home corner courtesy of Mrs Kupriene and eggcellent finger gyms!

Science Learning Challenge Winners!

Congratulations to our Science Week Learning Challenge winners! Moyin, Sophie, Temilola and Katlyn all brought in great science facts as well as photos of their exciting experiments from home! First prize went to Bella for her super research of the Big Bang Theory, which she then explained to her teachers in lots of detail- wonderful!

This Week's Showbie Stars Are...

Dorrie and Florence! 

Dorrie impressed in Cherry class due to her reflectiveness regarding her Showbie job. After careful consideration, she realised she hadn't provided enough detail in her comments and this would mean it would be impossible for an adult to check if her work was correct. So, she went back to her work and clarified her comments. This meant Miss Estall was able to mark her work and as a result, award her as Showbie Star! 

For this same reason, Florence has made Miss Rollin happy! She left some useful feedback on her assignment stating that she wasn't quite secure in her turns, proving she is also reflective. This meant that Miss Rollin has been able meet the children's needs and revisit the terms clockwise and anticlockwise until confidence levels improved. Well done Florence, your honestly regarding your understanding is exactly what every teacher needs!

Miss Estall and Miss Rollin are just about the proudest teachers in the universe because of the hard work displayed by these wonderful boys! Not only have they been working very hard in Read Write Inc, but they have been producing super writing in Big Write sessions too.
