Year 2 - Science

Science Topic: Plants

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our exciting new Science topic, Plants, the children in Year 2 will be taking part in a range of hands-on activities to help them learn about how plants grow and where they come from.

To support this learning, we would be grateful if you could send your child in with the following items;

One fruit and one vegetable, these will be used in class to dissect and closely examine the seeds and structures inside. This will help the children to identify different types of seeds and understand how plants grow. (Examples include: an apple, tomato, pepper, carrot, or similar – nothing too large or exotic, please.)

One clean, empty yogurt pot, we will be using these to plant bulbs in class, allowing the children to observe the growth process over time.

Thank you for your continued support in making our learning as fun and engaging as possible. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,
Year 2 team

Year 2 What We Are Learning

   Literacy

This term, we are exploring The
Chocolate Planet, a delightful story
set in a faraway galaxy where two
aliens embark on a fun-filled adventure!

The children have absolutely loved
diving into the story and have shown
great excitement as the plot unfolds.
To bring the story to life, they even
created their own sweet treats to
decorate our working walls—our classroom
now looks good enough to eat!

Maths: Statistics
This week, children interpreted pictograms
involving real life examples. They  used
their knowledge of  2, 5 and 10 times
tables. Well done Year 2!

Geography

This week in Geography, pupils explored the

difference between weather and climate.

They learned to distinguish between short-term

atmospheric conditions (weather) and long-term

patterns over time (climate). Pupils also studied

the various climate types found around the world

and successfully identified and matched each

climate to its correct definition.

PSHE Curriculum: Growing and Changing 2025

After half term, the children at Broadford Primary School will all be focusing on ‘Growing and Changing’. This part of the programme is designed to help children make healthy choices and keep themselves safe during their school years and beyond.

From September 2020 relationships education became a legal requirement; parts of sex education were already legal requirements before this time, within the National Curriculum. The design of the programme has taken into account the requirements of the statutory guidance, up-to-date best practice guidance, and the needs of our children

Please find below information specific for your child. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher.

Year 1 Barleylands Trip

 Year 1 Barleylands Trip

Tuesday 3rd June  2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip to Barleylands has been booked for our Year 1 pupils. This visit is part of our exciting new topic, ‘Scrum-diddly-umptious’. During the trip, the children will take part in a workshop called ‘From Field to Fork’ on Tuesday 15th July 2025.

The children will travel by coach and need to arrive at school promptly by 8:30 am. We will be leaving school at 9:00 am. Please ensure your child wears their school uniform, appropriate footwear, and brings a waterproof coat. As the weather is likely to be warm, please also provide a sun hat and apply sunscreen before school.

Lunch will be eaten at Barleylands, so children should bring a packed lunch in a designated disposable bag. Please do not include fizzy drinks or glass bottles. If your child requires a school lunch, please complete the preferences form below by Friday 13th June 2025 to allow us time to process your order.

We will leave Barleylands at 2:00 pm and aim to return by the end of the school day. Children will need to be collected from outside their classrooms as usual. If there is any delay on the return journey, we will inform the school office and update you with a new arrival time.

We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £15 per child to cover the cost of the coach and workshop. If we do not receive enough contributions, the trip will unfortunately not be able to go ahead. Payments can be made via your ‘Parent Pay’ account. If you have any questions regarding payment, please contact the School Office.

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

 Year One Team
