Welcome to Year 1
The children have had a brilliant start to their learning journey in Year 1. We are so impressed with how quickly they have settled into their new routines and classes. This week the children have been showing us how amazing they are with their writing and number work. They have enjoyed exploring their new indoor and outdoor environments

Dear Parents and Carers,
Year One - Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back to a new school year. We have had a fantastic first week getting to know the children and are so proud of the way they have adapted to Year One and their new routines.
We hope you find this curriculum letter informative. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher by email if you have any questions regarding Year One. (year1@broadford.havering.sch.uk)
Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
· 15 minutes reading to an adult and note in the reading record
· 15 minutes practicing spellings
· rehearsing times tables facts (2x, 5x and 10x tables)
Spellings:
The children will receive spellings each Monday in a red exercise book. These words will usually be either ‘red words’ (words that cannot be sounded out) or ‘high frequency words’ (words that they will use in the writing frequently).
Please ensure that your child brings their red spelling book to school every Friday. They will complete their test in the book as this allows you to see their results. We will then send new spellings home in the book each Monday.
School Uniform
It has been wonderful to see the Year 1 pupils return to school looking very smart in their school uniform. Please be reminded that the school colours are grey, black and navy. School uniform is available from local supermarkets and through Premier School Wear Children are permitted to wear stud earrings and must not wear nail varnish.
Reading Books
As reading is a huge priority here at Broadford, we will do our best to encourage the children to change their books regularly and every child will read 1:1 with an adult at least once a week.
105 Books to Read Before Leaving Broadford
Please be reminded of our new reading reward system, where each year pupils can read 15 quality stories and be rewarded with certificates and prizes. There will be three certificates to earn - bronze, silver and gold. The children will keep trackers in school to monitor the books they have read.
Experiences / Trips
This term, the chidlren will be taking part in a Space Day related to the story Beegu.

Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this half term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please get in touch through our Year One email . We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Year 1 PE and Forest School Tuesdays
Year One's PE and Forest School day will be TUESDAYs. PE sessions will take place outside, please ensure children have appropriate footwear.
Apricot class will attend Forest School for 5 weeks starting 13.09.22
. Beech and Walnut class will attend PE.
PE Kits to remain in school and they will be sent home at the end of each half term. Forest School kits can remain in school, unless dirty. Children will bring any wet or dirty clothes home as needed.
