Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Hollie and Keira; our fabulous Star Writers!

 

The girls wrote a diary entry as Samuel Pepys this week. They both used powerful vocabulary to ensure the reader could imagine that fateful night in 1666 as well as remembering to write in the past tense!

 

Cedar travel back to 1666!

This afternoon, the children of Cedar class were transported back to 1666. They found themselves on Pudding Lane the day before the Great Fire of London began. Whilst shopping at the market, they were surrounded by rats. The children acted out the market scene of the day before, moving into the night before. They all slept whilst the baker on Pudding Lane left the oven on. They woke up to embers all around, the children helped the fire spread across London by pretending to be the wind. They then passed a bucket of water around to try to get the fire out. Eventually they worked together to blow the houses down using gun powder to stop the fire from spreading further.

They memorised a rhyme:

"Up high like flames in the sky,

Down  low like embers that glow."

They also learnt the customs of how to greet King Charles, how to escape the plague and how to become the easterly winds which made the fire spread. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and certainly consolidated what they already knew and learnt some new facts about the fire! 

"King Charles was on the throne at the time of the Great Fire of London", Ruben. 

"The wind made the the fire spread", Indie. 

Cherry Homework Race Update...

With only two weeks left in this half term, the Homework Race is nail bitingly close! So many children haven't dropped a single point yet as they have remembered their completed spellings every single week, thus are on track to pass the finishing line by half term!

 

Remember, you can still make extra moves on the track if you are reading regularly at home. So please read, read, read!

 

 

 

 

Road Safety Show

Today Year 2 have been learning about how to be safe on the roads. Watching a production about Road Safety allowed them to learn all the rules of the road. They learnt the dangers of the road and understood the consequences of not following the correct safety procedures.

The children in Year 2 know that if they ride their bikes they must: wear a helmet, ride on the pavement, use a crossing and ride sensibly. They know that when they cross the road they must stop at the curb and look both ways before crossing. They must also listen for traffic. The children were able to answer all the questions in the Safety Quiz; they are certainly ready to ride their bikes and cross the road safely! 

When you cross the road you must look both ways and listen for traffic - Laicey.

If you are riding your bike you must wear a helmet - Vinnie.

Pine Class Investigate the Wright Brothers

Last week, Pine class were looking at the history of flight as part of their investigations into the Wright Brothers. The children learned about early planes and gliders and were able to see how they have evolved into the modern plane. The children investigated the evolution of flight by making their own kites, similar to the process the Wright Brothers went through, when they expored flying machines back in 1903.

Year 1- up, up and away!

In history, the children are looking at the history of flight, with a particular focus on The Wright Brothers.  In class, we have looked at the progression of flight, from kites, to hot air balloons, to aeroplanes! The children have been developing their understanding of chronology and have been putting events on a timeline. 

We started our timeline with kites. The children each made their own kite and tested them in the outdoor area. It wasn't a windy day... But that didn't stop the year one children! 

Look who has joined Mulberry Class!

Today, two new members have joined Mulberry Class... 2 gold fish! The children were over the moon to arrive on Monday morning to see their new class pets in the middle of the table. Excited to include them in the class, they asked to pick their names straight away. The children put forward a collection of names and then it went to a vote. The children chose... Pixie and Dylan!

They then created some colour fish art using a range of different materials. We discussed what our responsibilities were as pet owners. The children will take turns to feed  Pixie and Dylan and check their tank to ensure they have a clean environment!
