Week 5 Year 2 Home Learning

 Good Morning Year 2,

We are very proud of you all for all of your work last week! We know it isn't always easy but every day we are seeing more of you submitting work and attending our live sessions, we love seeing your faces and have been so impressed with your super behaviour and amazing ideas so make sure you keep attending!

Here is the timetable for next week:

Timetable

We are continuing with division, remember this builds up over time so if you are finding it hard go back to last week to help you understand. This week we are looking at Zog in Literacy, another one of our favourite Julia Donaldson stories!

Week 4

Live sessions

It is so lovely to see all of your faces and hear all of your ideas in our lessons. We will continue with Literacy sessions on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 am. On Monday and Wednesday we will also be live at 9:30 am for an overview of our tasks and day. There will be story or class game/social sessions at 2:30 every day.

You will also have reading sessions or phonics sessions and possibly other sessions if a teacher has spoken to you. Please keep us informed if you have any issues attending these! Keep checking the stream for any reminders :)

Resources

We are trying to keep what you need to a minimum so generally lessons will only require a pencil or paper to complete. For topic lessons you can use Miss Tynan's example for Geography but you might want to start collecting and looking closely at your own food packaging. For Art you will also need a pencil/paper and if you have a piece of fruit or vegetable please bring this too! There is a cooking idea for Wednesday but this is only a  suggestion and you could definitely save this for another week, so don't feel like you have to go and buy ingredients!

Independence

As always the timetable can be flexible so please adapt to your needs. Can we please request that children complete the literacy by hand (using pencil/pen and paper), unless they are really good at typing independently. The children are at an important stage we they are developing their handwriting skills and ability to write in sentences so it helps us support this. We really, really appreciate all the help you are giving them but remember they should always be working harder than you and in school they would be expected to work with some independence. We want to be marking children's work and giving them tips so resit the urge to complete tasks for them. We will be on hand if you are finding this hard but please encourage them to try on their own this week, we will do the same in our sessions with them.

We hope you have a lovely week. Remember we are here to help you, please do email year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk if you would like any help or have any questions.

Week 5

Quote of the Week

Good morning everyone,

Well done for getting through a whole month of home schooling. We cannot praise you all enough for the commitment and effort that you are all putting in.

This week is National Storytelling Week and we would like you to share your favourite stories and characters. You can dress as your favourite character and share the story for others to enjoy the book as much as you do!

There was a wonderful response to 'Wellness Wednesday' last week as we encouraged you to take some time away from the screen or set work and find something that you take enjoyment from.

For this Wednesday afternoon, we have provided an outdoor activity that you could do but this is not a set task.

Below is this week's home learning timetable. You can chose to follow it, or dip in and out as it suits you. Each day there will be a Maths, Literacy, PE, Topic and wellness session.

Week 4 Year 2 Home Learning

 Week 4 Home Learning

It's week 4 of home learning, which means you have been doing a great job for almost a month!

We know as time goes on motivation can dip both for parents/carers and children. It's really important that you engage with the google meet sessions to let the children see each other and that you speak to teachers, we can support you to re-engage the children if it is needed. It is important that children continue to learn and it is also important that families are happy. We know you are trying your best, the timetable is a guide please change or tweak to suit you . We are always on hand to support in any way we can.

Ensure children know that they should be independent for at least some of the time, they may need some support to find links but will be used to sounding out their words in normal lessons etc. If possible we would prefer photos of handwritten work, unless children are able to type independently. This way we can assess how the children are working and provide support if we need to.

If you need any help/advice or if you have any suggestions please message us on Google classroom or send an email to year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk. We loved seeing grown -ups sharing great finds like outdoor resources and gymnastics classes last week, it makes it feel like a team effort and we know we are all in this together!

Thank you very much for your kind messages regarding Mrs King last week. If you have any memories or messages please do take some time to email them to year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk or comment on the weekly newsletter blog, we will be sure to pass them on to her family. These messages would mean a lot to her family at a difficult time.

Many Thanks,

The Year 2 Team

Year 2 Home Learning Week 3

 Good Morning Parents/Carers,

On Friday, we heard the devastating news that Mrs King passed away after a short battle with Covid.

For those of you who attended Broadford Nursery you will remember her as your Nursery teaching assistant. Mrs King was a kind, caring and funny lady who played a really big part in many children's important first years of learning.
As  staff, we are completely heartbroken. Mrs King was a huge part of our school. She worked at Broadford for over 20 years and had such a positive impact on everyone, each day.  So many of us have happy memories of her time at Broadford School that we will treasure, as we are sure many of you will too. We will all really miss her and our thoughts are with her family, who she absolutely adored, at this sad time.

In our hearts and thoughts xxx

Week 3 Home Learning

We shared a form last week for parents to give feedback on our online learning. Thank you for filling it in (if you haven't you still can on Google Classroom) it really helped us to plan for future improvements and it was lovely to hear positive comments! What was very evident was that each households 'perfect' home learning would look very different so while we have taken all suggestions and requests on board please understand we are trying to keep everybody happy and meet all needs.

You are all doing an amazing job it a very difficult time! We have seen lots of smiling photos of children completing all sorts of work, jobs around the home and creative activities so we can see they are still happy and safe which is the most important thing.

What we have changed

  • The majority of parents requested either pre-recorded or a mixture of pre-recorded and live lessons. We have changed two of our morning meet sessions to class literacy sessions. For those unable to attend please don't panic we will continue to provide the learning and record the video for you to watch as you can.
  • The reason we have focused on literacy sessions is our engagement has consistently been higher for Maths. The days we won't have live sessions we will try to ensure tasks allow for some independence.
  • We have adapted the phonics timetable to allow you to find your groups sound easier.
  • We have ensured Mathletics tasks can be used as an extension and will be linked to the class maths task if children wish to complete these.
  • For any children finding the work difficult we will be in touch with suggestions and changes we have made to support this.
  • We will continue to have a class session on a Monday once a week for children to have an opportunity to interact with their class.
  • We had one comment that we really thought about, it can be hard to fit in outdoor time! As a school who value this enormously we want to encourage outdoor time so have allowed some dedicated time to this. We would also encourage everybody to have breaks between sessions, move around, get out if the weather allows!
  • We will include how to videos for submitting work and using google classroom,  a great idea!
Many Thanks,
The Year 2 Team
