Year One use the firepit

Year One visit the Firepit!

In history, we have been focusing on what Life was like in the Tudor Times, especially how their home life was in contrast to our homes now. One of the aspects the children found most fascinating was the fact that there was no electricity and all cooking had to be done on an open fire.

To give the children just a small sense of what this would have been like, we went to the firepit and with an adult modelling, the children learnt how to start a fire!

They then cooked a few items over the fire. First they toasted bread, as bread was a big part of the Tudor diet. Then the toasted a marshmallow each, a clear contrast to what was available in the Tudor times!

'I loved cooking on the fire! It was so exciting. I ate all my bread and marshmallows'- Madalina, Rowan

'I was a bit frightened at first but I listened carefully so I knew how to keep safe. I really enjoyed it'- Ife, Mulberry

Year One's Learning Challenge

Year One's Learning Challenge

Below is the learning challenge for this term. We encourage the children to select the level that they want to do and the area that they would like to focus on. This is a task to do at home, however we would love to see the children's work once they have completes it. They will receive a certificate in E for Excellence assembly and their work will also be published on Facebook.

We look forward to seeing all of the children's great efforts!

Poem: ‘Warriors’

Deeds not words!
They cried in their protest
Marching on Parliament
Intent on their quest
To the corrupt politicians
Who recorded their struggle
But denied them the vote
And left them to juggle
Their lives that equalled
Less than their brothers
Where they had no rights
Not even as mothers
The women prepared
To fight their fight
Be true to their cause
Take down the men
And change the laws
So thank you to those
Brave women of old
Who did what they did
Without being told
We now have the right
As women, to fight
Without risk to our freedom

And stand up for our rights!

Poem: The World’s fastest bicycle by Kenn Nesbitt

My bicycle's the fastest
that the world has ever seen;
it has supersonic engines
and a flame-retardant sheen.

My bicycle will travel
a gazillion miles an hour --
it has rockets on the handlebars
for supplemental power.

The pedals both are jet-propelled
to help you pedal faster,
and the shifter is equipped
with an electric turbo-blaster.

The fender has a parachute
in case you need to brake.
Yes, my bike is undeniably
the fastest one they make.

My bicycle's incredible!
I love the way it feels,
and I'll like it even more
when Dad removes the training wheels.

Year 2 Star Writers

A huge well done to Frankie and Zara who are our Star Writers this week.

Frankie has been extremely reflective in Literacy and Language this term. He has worked hard to edit his writing to ensure it is always his best and has produced many super texts. This week we were particularly impressed with his own set of independent instructions whereby he remembered most of the features that need to be included.

"I used a 'how to title' and a 'you will need' section. I had different adverbs as well."  Frankie

Zara has impressed her teacher by working very hard on her presentation which has come along beautifully as well as her spelling. This meant her overall piece of writing, which was a letter to Tim Peake, was brilliant!

Year 2 Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 2 – Spring 2 Curriculum Newsletter

Welcome back to the New Term! We hope you find this letter informative. This term, University of Broadford will continue. Each week on a Friday afternoon, the children will attend their chosen course, which they are very excited about. At the end of this term, children will ‘graduate’ which you will be invited to attend (dates to be confirmed).

Homework:
Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
·         15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record
·         15 minutes practicing spellings
·         15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have a new Learning Challenge for children to attempt this Autumn term which is attached. All of the activities are based around a significant person, poem or painting relating to our topics. Children do not have to attempt every activity but instead select the activities that they are most interested in and compile a project that reflects the extra time and effort that they have put into their challenge. We hope that children will take their time with the challenge and be proud of the work they produce they should hand this in to their teacher at the end of the Half Term.

Spellings:
Spellings will be given out on Mondays. The children should practise their words every evening. The test will take place on Fridays.

Trips & sharing assemblies
Year 2 will have a Sculpture workshop on 7th March.
We will also be going to Hilldene School for our annual infant music festival on 27th March.
Cherry will have their sharing assembly on 25th April.

Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics which the children will be covering this term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please let the team know. We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Estall          Miss Hammond          Mr Jackson

Year 2 Maths Parties!

A huge thank you to all that came to our Maths Parties on Friday. The turn out was absolutely brilliant and the children loved having you in their classrooms to share their learning with you.

Here are just some of the photos from the morning...

We look forward to welcoming you back into our classrooms again soon!

Yummy Pancakes in Year 2!

"Hmmmm" "Yum" "Delicious" "Scrumptious"

These were just some of the words heard during our Pancake celebration in Year 2!

Shrove Tuesday fell during half term this year, but that did not stop us from having our own belated Pancake day celebration!

First, the children learnt all about this Christian tradition. They discovered that this day precedes Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. They then spoke about how Christians often give up something for lent and discussed what they think they could give up for the 40 days (Sundays are excluded).

"I think I could give up chocolate and fizzy drinks." remarked Moyin

The children then reflected on other religious  traditions and spoke about the fact that different religions celebrate different things. They even noticed some similarities between traditions which proved they are great reflective learners being able to link and notice similarities and differences.

"We fast during Ramadan" Rajaab & Zara

"A lot of celebrations in all different religions seem to be about food" noticed Malachi

"I like Pancakes!" exclaimed Jeremiah.

"Hmmmm they're so good" beamed Harry.

"Not everyone celebrates this, just like some people don't celebrate Christmas."  Nancy

With full tummies and smiles on their faces, the children bounced back to class reflecting on this Christian celebration.

Super Shapes In Year 2!

Welcome back to school Year 2!

The children were straight back into Maths and excited to begin their new topic- shape! The children have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes, looking at their properties and learning all their names. We have been investigating what makes a triangle a triangle and how these can come in different sizes and orientations.

The children have also been avidly completing jobs- making tallies out of a box of skittles, cutting out shape nets and completing tarsias.

The children have also been making 3D shapes themselves ensuring they have the correct properties!

'The tarsia was hard because I had to look at each side of the triangle piece and match up the answer' Malachi

'We needed to sort the skittles to find the total and then create a tally chart' Lily

'I made a 3D shape- a cube from a net and then I helped my friends' Maddison

New Topic in Year 2 - Space!

With the recent news about the success of the SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket launch on 6th February, we decided to incorporate a space theme into Year 2. Whilst it could be a possibility for commercial space flight for the future of our Year 2's, the children have been excited to hear about Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket on the market (it is 70 metres tall and with three boosters containing 27 engines).

In class, the children have been learning about the planets and have begun to look at some of our superhero astronauts, such as Helen Sharman and Tim Peake. There are lots of space themed activities in our small world area, construction area and finger gyms.

'We have written our questions to Tim Peake- I wanted to know what life is like in a rocket'  Frankie

'What do the stars look like when you are that close?' Rajaab

'Can you keep pets in space?' Nancy

'Tim used to be in the army and was a pilot before he became an astronaut' Malachi

'He had to do lots of challenges like stay underwater for days and then live in the cold for weeks' Harry

Year 2 Visit Mead Farm!

Last week, the children in Year 2 had a great time spending time with the adorable and very excitable animals down at Mead Farm.We learnt about how to look after animals and the conditions they need to live comfortably as well as what they eat and drink. We look forward to paying our new fury/feathery friends another visit in the Summer term.

"The goats were so crazy they run everywhere!" Roberto Silva

"I didn't realise that goats liked to have so much exercise; they can climb so well!" Malachi Wright

"I thought the chickens were so funny, they have all different feathers like they have different hair cuts!" Tilly Butler

Number Day In Year 2!

Wow! What a fun-filled, fantastic day Friday was! The children arrived to School dressed in all sorts of  Math themed clothing and were immersed in a variety of Maths activities. The children completed a carousell around 5 different classes whereby they completed different math focused activities.

In Cedar class, the focus was about time (hence Miss Estall's clock attire). The children had to predict and find out 'how many' different things they could do in different amounts of time including star jumps, hula hooping, squats, balancing on one leg and catching.

"I was so worn out after doing the star jumps! But I found out I can do 67 in a minute!"  Brooke Romerill

In Cherry class, the activities revolved around shape and number. The children played a game which was a twist on Musical statues! When the music stopped they had to make different shapes with their bodies, find a given amount of children and chant different times tables.

How many multi link cubes can you get into the bucket in 30 seconds?

How many squats can you do in 30 seconds?

How many times can you catch a beanbag in 1 minute?

Check out some of these outfits!

"It was really fun making different shapes with our bodies, hexagon was really hard!" Frankie Watson
