KS1 Maths Challenge

The Maths Challenge is an effective and exciting way to extend your mathematical thinking. Every two weeks there is a different Maths Challenge for the children in KS1 to complete. The Maths Challenge is split into two challenges:

The Weekly Maths Challenge: designed to develop what the children already know whilst allowing them to develop their mathematical reasoning skills.

The Fermi Challenge: an estimation problem designed to teach dimensional analysis and estimation. Fermi problems typically involve making justified guesses about quantities.

The challenges will be updated every two weeks and posted on the blog so you can join in at home.

This week's challenges:

Cedar: Maisy's Learning Challenge

Congratulations to Maisy who completed the Year 2 Learning Challenge over half term. Maisy chose to recreate the Great Fire of London using cardboard, paint and cotton wool. Maisy made her 3D London exactly like London would have been in 1666; with houses built close together. Well done Maisy, thank you for bringing your creation into school for Cedar to enjoy!

"The cotton wool represents the straw roofs." Maisy

Look out for the new Year 2 Learning Challenge which will be based on our new topic: Australia vs UK.

Fun in Year 1

It has been a great week back for the children in year one, all excited to see their friends and tell tales from their holiday. However, it did not take the children long to explore the new resources in their environment and for the creative juices to begin to flow!

In the 'loose parts' area, the children discovered some new tarpaulin and wanted to make a den. What started out as a small den, developed into a huge canopy, with the sides being pinned to the poles and the wall.

A group of year one boys then came up with a fantastic idea! They wanted to use the roof of the den as part of a catching game. They came up with rules together and as the balls were thrown up the sloped roof and came rolling back down, the children had to catch as many as they could before they reached the floor.

It was great to see year one using Reciprocity and Resourcefulness , working collaboratively to create new games together!

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Olivia and Isabelle; our Star Writers this week!

The girls wrote an information text to inform other children how to stay safe on the road. They used many features of an information text and even included a 'Fabulous final fact!'

Did you know that more than 300,000 people are hurt on the roads every year? Isabelle

Cedar: Keira's Learning Challenge

Well done to Keira Baker who completed the Learning Challenge for this half term. Not only did Keira draw a fantastic picture of London Landmarks, she also found out many facts about London.

The children in Cedar Class could not believe that over 800 people work in Buckingham Palace!

Well done Keira, it is great to see you extending your learning at home.

Cedar Cupcake Party

The children in Cedar Class were very excited this week as they had 100% attendance and therefore won a cupcake party.

At Broadford. turning up to school every day, on time is one of the pupil values. The children in Cedar Class understand the importance of turning up to school each day as it will give them the best opportunities to learn.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their cupcakes and can't wait to win another party!

"It is very important to come to school every day so we can learn the most." Lewis.

Cherry Class Drama Workshop.

Last week the children of Cherry class had an extra special treat; on Thursday afternoon they took part in a drama workshop relating to The Great Fire Of London.

The children found themselves transported back to 1666, re-enacting the fateful night the Fire started in Pudding Lane. They acted out various daily activities that would have taken place during this time before moving on to the Fire itself. Finally they met Sir Thomas Bloodworth, the Mayor at the time, who demanded significant changes were put in place to ensure such disastrous things never happened again!

The children loved every moment of the afternoon; it was great to see them express themselves so creatively using drama.

It was so fun pretending to be the fire flames. Charlie

I liked pulling the houses down, I bet they were so heavy! Paris

Cedar: Laicey's Learning Challenge

Well done to Laicey who has completed the Learning Challenge for this half term. Laicey not only completed the art aspect of the Learning Challenge, but also completed the poetry section.

Laicey created a humongous collage depicting various aspects of London - during the Great Fire of London in 1666 and contrasting it with London today in 2016. It was very interesting to see the recreation of the Great Fire of London to celebrate its' 350th anniversary.

Laicey also wrote the poem 'London's Burning' in her neatest handwriting. It was great to see Laicey begin to join some of her letters.

The children in Cedar Class enjoyed hearing about Laicey's Learning Challenge adventure, well done Laicey!

Cedar Class Demonstrate Reciprocity

Reciprocity is this terms Learning Power focus. Reciprocity is the ability to work well collaboratively, to be respectful of others and to communicate confidently and effectively.

The children in Cedar Class certainly demonstrated Reciprocity in their recent Art/D.T lesson where they had to work together to create a 3D house from the Great Fire of London. The children used various different materials to make their house, including: paper, card, glue and cellotape. The children had to work collaboratively to decide what features of the 1666 houses they wanted to include. Most children chose to colour their houses white and include a pointed roof and black beams - common features of the houses in 1666.

After half term Year 2 will be burning their houses in the fire pit to recreate the Great Fire of London.

"We included a pointed roof as the houses in 1666 had pointed roofs." Sophia.

"I am working with Joe to help him stick the paper with cellotape." Maisy.

To find out more about the 4R's please visit the Broadford
website.

Year 2 Star Writers

Well done to Hollie and Keira; our fabulous Star Writers!

The girls wrote a diary entry as Samuel Pepys this week. They both used powerful vocabulary to ensure the reader could imagine that fateful night in 1666 as well as remembering to write in the past tense!

Cedar travel back to 1666!

This afternoon, the children of Cedar class were transported back to 1666. They found themselves on Pudding Lane the day before the Great Fire of London began. Whilst shopping at the market, they were surrounded by rats. The children acted out the market scene of the day before, moving into the night before. They all slept whilst the baker on Pudding Lane left the oven on. They woke up to embers all around, the children helped the fire spread across London by pretending to be the wind. They then passed a bucket of water around to try to get the fire out. Eventually they worked together to blow the houses down using gun powder to stop the fire from spreading further.

They memorised a rhyme:
"Up high like flames in the sky,
Down  low like embers that glow."

They also learnt the customs of how to greet King Charles, how to escape the plague and how to become the easterly winds which made the fire spread. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and certainly consolidated what they already knew and learnt some new facts about the fire!

"King Charles was on the throne at the time of the Great Fire of London", Ruben.

"The wind made the the fire spread", Indie.

Cherry Homework Race Update...

With only two weeks left in this half term, the Homework Race is nail bitingly close! So many children haven't dropped a single point yet as they have remembered their completed spellings every single week, thus are on track to pass the finishing line by half term!

Remember, you can still make extra moves on the track if you are reading regularly at home. So please read, read, read!

Road Safety Show

Today Year 2 have been learning about how to be safe on the roads. Watching a production about Road Safety allowed them to learn all the rules of the road. They learnt the dangers of the road and understood the consequences of not following the correct safety procedures.

The children in Year 2 know that if they ride their bikes they must: wear a helmet, ride on the pavement, use a crossing and ride sensibly. They know that when they cross the road they must stop at the curb and look both ways before crossing. They must also listen for traffic. The children were able to answer all the questions in the Safety Quiz; they are certainly ready to ride their bikes and cross the road safely!

When you cross the road you must look both ways and listen for traffic - Laicey.

If you are riding your bike you must wear a helmet - Vinnie.

Pine Class Investigate the Wright Brothers

Last week, Pine class were looking at the history of flight as part of their investigations into the Wright Brothers. The children learned about early planes and gliders and were able to see how they have evolved into the modern plane. The children investigated the evolution of flight by making their own kites, similar to the process the Wright Brothers went through, when they expored flying machines back in 1903.

"I've made mine really bright to see in the sky" Molly
"Now we have all things which fly, like gliders, blimps and drones" Blake

Year 1- up, up and away!

In history, the children are looking at the history of flight, with a particular focus on The Wright Brothers.  In class, we have looked at the progression of flight, from kites, to hot air balloons, to aeroplanes! The children have been developing their understanding of chronology and have been putting events on a timeline.

We started our timeline with kites. The children each made their own kite and tested them in the outdoor area. It wasn't a windy day... But that didn't stop the year one children!

Look who has joined Mulberry Class!

Today, two new members have joined Mulberry Class... 2 gold fish! The children were over the moon to arrive on Monday morning to see their new class pets in the middle of the table. Excited to include them in the class, they asked to pick their names straight away. The children put forward a collection of names and then it went to a vote. The children chose... Pixie and Dylan!

They then created some colour fish art using a range of different materials. We discussed what our responsibilities were as pet owners. The children will take turns to feed  Pixie and Dylan and check their tank to ensure they have a clean environment!

Year 1 Star Writer

Congratulations to Tyler and Katlyn who both produced a fantastic piece of writing this week! After our visit from PC Wayne, the children wrote about their favourite part of the afternoon. PC Wayn's hats were very popular!
Keep up the great work Tyler and Katlyn!

Year 2 Star Writers

Zac and Bobby are our fantastic Star Writers this week. The boys had a super imagination when writing a diary entry as if they were caught in the Great Fire of London.

Here are some examples of the super sentences they thought of:

Huge buildings were crashing down all around me.

Blistering, flickering flames were everywhere.

Suddenly out of nowhere I heard an almighty explosion that made my ears hurt.

The bad, choking smoke filled my lungs and made me feel sick!

Keep up the fabulous work boys!

Year 2 Star Writers

Here are our fantastic Star Writers this week! Bayleigh and Sophia demonstrated great resourcefulness by using their word banks effectively to find powerful adjectives to describe Robot City.
