Good morning everyone,

We hope you are all well as we enter week 6 of Home Learning.

Just a reminder from last week:
There are now a few ways to get in touch with the Year One Team. To ensure you receive a speedy response, can we ask that you use our Year 1 and 2 mailbox please? The Year One Team can access this directly. If you send a message via Facebook, it may take some time to get to us.

Google Classroom
How to Create Your First Google Classroom - EdTechTeam
Thank you to those who joined last week. We now have 35 members of Year One accessing the Google Classroom platform. We have 90 children in the year group so are very keen to get this number up. Can we ask our wonderful parent/carer community to help spread the word and mention this to any Year 1 parents/carers that you are in contact with, but may not have seen this information.

We are so pleased with how Google Classroom is being used and have had really positive feedback from you. We love seeing the work from the child and commenting on this. We are also enjoying seeing all of the different things we are seeing on here, such as:

Aisha and Annabel engaging in the first short conversation.
Flynn sharing a photo on him spending time with his new baby sister.
Eddie posting a video of the deer he spotted on his forest walk
Miraz showing us her new puppy, Biscuit.
Harvey sharing a photo of his heroic great grandad to celebrate VE day.

There were so many other great example, so make sure when you log on to Google Classroom, you scroll back and take a peek!

If you haven't yet got your password, please email us at year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk with 'Google Classroom' in the subject heading. We will then reply within 24hrs with your child's log in details.

Ladybird maths
We LOVE these homemade maths resources! There are so many things you can do with these.
Start collecting bottle tops. With a permanent marker add the spots. You can then use these to add amounts together, create multiplication problems (remember to use objects to create groups) or subtract.
You can also do some great place value activities, see picture below:
larger dots=10, and smaller dots=1
Red ladybird=34
Blue ladybird=26
Purple ladybird=26
Plastic Lid Ladybugs: a cute kid's craft made from recycled milk lids!

Multiplication Arrays
Create some multiplication flash cards. Using playdough create the groups and organise them into arrays.

Lego Place Value
We want children to understand that when they write the “2” in 24, it doesn’t mean 2. It actually means 20. Create a place value mat and make the number using lego pieces, see example below:

For those of you missing Forest School, you could create your own forest school on your daily walks. You could collect resources on your walk and create some wonderful nature art. Make sure you take a picture of it and share it on Google Classroom for everyone to see!

This week, can you use the things you collect on your daily walk to create a leaf animal?

Year One Phonic Screening Test
Each year, children across England sit a phonics screening test, which usually takes place in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. However, because of school closures, the checks will not formally take place this year.
Even though these test will not be taking place, they are a good way to check your child is on track and making progress.

Below we will share a past paper. If possible, we would like you to look at this with your child. There are 40 words, 20 'nonsence' or 'alien' words ( not real words) and 20 real words. In previous years, the pass mark has been 32 correct words. Keep practising, we will share a different paper next week.

Hall, Patti - 1st Grade / Reading

We cannot stress enough how important reading with your child each day is. We understand that with home learning, trying to fit everything in will be a challenging task in itself. Please can we ask that, if possible, you prioritise reading every day, even if its just for 10 minutes.

Oxford Owl reading website are offering free access to their books online. The children will be familiar with these books as it is already part of our readings scheme. The colours match to their current reading colours. To gain access to these great resources, sign up for FREE at https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Children can read the stories more than once. The first time they read they will be focusing on decoding, which means sounding out their words and this may take them a while. The second time they read start to encourage the children to sound out the words in their head (some children might need to whisper the sounds). The aim is to increase the speed and fluency so the children can focus on understanding what they are reading. Finally they can focus on using expression when reading the story and answering questions about what is happening.

Children learning to blend and read simple words such as 'cat' or 'went' will be learning Set 1 sounds and reading Ditty or red books.
Children learning Set 2 sounds will start to read Green, Purple and Pink.
Children learning Set 3 sounds will start to read Yellow, Blue then Grey.

If you are unsure of your child's book colour send an email to the shared mailbox and your child's teacher can advise you further. Happy reading!

Other reading resources
Reading to children is still really important. If you are struggling to access books at home Cbeebies have a daily bed time story. Try to watch this with your child and talk about what happened after: Bedtime stories.

Don't forget to check out Mr Maher's reading website. The site is based on animals and has some great photos and facts. There are also some quizzes the children can take part in.
