Week 5 Home Learning
Quote of the Week
Good morning everyone,
We hope you are all well as we enter week 5 of Home Learning. You are all doing such a fantastic job in this uncertain time and it's been great to hear how everyone is working hard to adapt to this situations.
There are now a few ways to get in touch with the school. To ensure you receive a speedy response, can I ask that you use our Year 1 and 2 mailbox please? The Year 1 team can access this directly. If you send a message via Facebook, it may take some time to get to us.
We are currently experiencing a very high volume of emails coming through as we try and give access to Google Classroom to 180 children . Thank you so much for bearing with us, we are trying our very best to ensure we are providing you with the information you need and sorting any problems that may occur. Please give us 24hrs to respond to you and if you have not heard back from us, contact us again via the mailbox.
Last week, we introduced Google Classroom to Key Stage One and so far we have had 30 children in Year One sign up. It's been lovely to see examples of the children's work and read and respond to messages from them.
Children can also send messages to each other on the stream. We liked seeing Larissa's comment on Eddie's science experiment and Francesca comment on his rocket. Also, Annabel and Maxi saying hello to their friends on the stream. Keep it up guys!
We would like to get all the children in Year One on board, so if you haven't yet got your password, please email us at year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk with 'Google Classroom' in the subject heading. We will then reply within 24hrs with your child's log in details.
As always, below is week 5's timetable. Remember, you can chose to follow it or dip in and out as it suits you. Each day there will be a maths, literacy, PE, topic and wellness session.

We have already blogged and sent home 200 common exception words that we would like the children to focus on.
Every week, we will be releasing 6 of these words for you to focus on. Every Friday, we will release the spelling test via video. The words for this week are as follows;
- any
- could
- mind
- prove
- be
- me
Please continue to practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables daily. There are videos on Youtube that your child can join in with.
Another very important skill we would like them to continue to practise is their number bond to 10, moving on to their number bonds to 20.
There are lots of songs the children can join in with on Youtube, just google 'number bonds to 10'. Here is another example: Making 10
There are also lots of practical activities you can create yourself using minimal resources:
Number bond hands!
Draw round your hands and cut out. Then stick the palms to the paper.
The example below shows 2 and 8.
Number bond chains
Starting with number bonds to 10 and working your way to number bonds to 20.
Lego bonds!
For those of you who like to create using Lego.
Can you make number bonds to 10?

Year One Phonic Screening Test
Each year, children across England sit a phonics screening test, which usually takes place in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. However, because of school closures, the checks will not formally take place this year.
Even though these test will not be taking place, they are a good way to check your child is on track and making progress.
Below we will share a past paper. If possible, we would like you to look at this with your child. There are 40 words, 20 'nonsence' or 'alien' words ( not real words) and 20 real words. In previous years, the pass mark has been 32 correct words. Keep practising, we will share a different paper next week.

We cannot stress enough how important reading with your child each day is. We understand that with home learning, trying to fit everything in will be a challenging task in itself. Please can we ask that, if possible, you prioritise reading every day, even if its just for 10 minutes.
Oxford Owl reading website are offering free access to their books online. The children will be familiar with these books as it is already part of our readings scheme. The colours match to their current reading colours. To gain access to these great resources, sign up for FREE at https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Children can read the stories more than once. The first time they read they will be focusing on decoding, which means sounding out their words and this may take them a while. The second time they read start to encourage the children to sound out the words in their head (some children might need to whisper the sounds). The aim is to increase the speed and fluency so the children can focus on understanding what they are reading. Finally they can focus on using expression when reading the story and answering questions about what is happening.
Children learning to blend and read simple words such as 'cat' or 'went' will be learning Set 1 sounds and reading Ditty or red books.
Children learning Set 2 sounds will start to read Green, Purple and Pink.
Children learning Set 3 sounds will start to read Yellow, Blue then Grey.
If you are unsure of your child's book colour send an email to the shared mailbox and your child's teacher can advise you further. Happy reading!
