Week 7 Home Learning
Quote of the Week
Good morning everyone,
We hope you all had a lovely weekend in the sunshine and are keeping safe!
We managed to speak to most families again last week and hear how you are all getting on.
We are sorry we couldn't give you more information about the governments announcement regarding Year One children coming back to school on 1st June. The school leaders are still in discussions with the local authority. Mr McLucas will share more information when he has it.
Please could you support the school by filling in the form below? It will ask you whether you will be sending your child back in June. If you select
'I will' but change your mind nearer the time (or visa versa), that is absolutely fine. It would really help the school to get a rough idea at this time.

Google Classroom
Thank you to those who joined last week. We now have 50 members of Year One accessing the Google Classroom platform. Thank you to some of our lovely parents/carers who told others and posted the information on groups. It really helped!
If you haven't yet got your password, please email us at
year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk with
'Google Classroom' in the subject heading. We will then reply within 24hrs with your child's log in details.
As always, below is week 7's timetable. Remember, you can chose to follow it, or dip in and out as it suits you. Each day there will be a maths, literacy, PE, topic and wellness session.

We have already blogged and sent home 200 common exception words that we would like the children to focus on.
Every week, we will be releasing 6 of these words for you to focus on. Every Friday, we will release the spelling test via video. The words for this week are as follows;
- My
- The
- Beautiful
- Even
- Most
- Come
Each week we set tasks on Mathletics, which the teachers can log on to and see how the children are getting on. If you need us to resend your Mathletics log in details, please email us at year12@broadford.havering.sch.uk with '
Mathletics' in the subject heading. As well as Mathletics, don't forget to check out
Rockstar Maths- https://ttrockstars.com/
Please continue to practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables daily an work on number bond to 10, moving on to number bonds to 20.
Car Maths
Create your own maths game together! In the image below, it focuses on addition, subtraction and dots. You could use the ideas below or you could include some of the strategies we have been posting during our home learning blogs: 10 frames, number lines, multiplication. Put the answers on the cars and see if your child can match the car to the answer.
What is the question?
If the answer is
20
what is the question?
For this task, can you think of a range of questions that include;
addition
subtraction
multiplication
division
Telling the time
Create your own watch to help you learn the time. We would like you to focus on half past and o'clock. If you want to push yourself, you can begin to look at quarter past and quarter to.
For those of you missing Forest School, you could create your own forest school on your daily walks.
Take some time to observe the bugs in your garden or on your walks. If possible, get up close and personal with a magnifying glass or a camera. Talk to your child about what colors they are, how they protect themselves (do they sting?), and how they work together to build a home (an ant hill is a great example of an insect colony.)
Some of the science that we are sending out will come from the following website: https://explorify.wellcome.ac.uk/register/your-details?signup_btn=header. To access the links, you will need to sign up. It is completely FREE and will give you access to a range of interesting science resources.

Year One Phonic Screening Test
Each year, children across England sit a phonics screening test, which usually takes place in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. However, because of school closures, the checks will not formally take place this year.
Even though these test will not be taking place, they are a good way to check your child is on track and making progress.
Below we will share a past paper. If possible, we would like you to look at this with your child. There are 40 words, 20 'nonsence' or 'alien' words ( not real words) and 20 real words. In previous years, the pass mark has been 32 correct words. Keep practising, we will share a different paper next week.

We cannot stress enough how important reading with your child each day is. We understand that with home learning, trying to fit everything in will be a challenging task in itself. Please can we ask that, if possible, you prioritise reading every day, even if its just for 10 minutes.
Oxford Owl reading website are offering free access to their books online. The children will be familiar with these books as it is already part of our readings scheme. The colours match to their current reading colours. To gain access to these great resources, sign up for FREE at https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Children can read the stories more than once. The first time they read they will be focusing on decoding, which means sounding out their words and this may take them a while. The second time they read start to encourage the children to sound out the words in their head (some children might need to whisper the sounds). The aim is to increase the speed and fluency so the children can focus on understanding what they are reading. Finally they can focus on using expression when reading the story and answering questions about what is happening.
Children learning to blend and read simple words such as 'cat' or 'went' will be learning Set 1 sounds and reading Ditty or red books.
Children learning Set 2 sounds will start to read Green, Purple and Pink.
Children learning Set 3 sounds will start to read Yellow, Blue then Grey.
If you are unsure of your child's book colour send an email to the shared mailbox and your child's teacher can advise you further. Happy reading!
