Year 2 Music Festival

Year 2 had a great time at the Infant Music Festival last term! They spent weeks learning 6 songs which they sang beautifully with the other Year 2 children in the cluster as well as their very own song, which was Elton John's 'Your Song'.

They sang loudly and proudly with great clarity as well as remembering all of the words to the various songs.

Live footage was posted on the Facebook page if you want to see more!

Below is this term's Learning Challenge for Year 2 which the children will have been given at the end of the day along with the curriculum newsletter.

MASSIVE Kumon Achievements For Arya & Adam!

A big congratulations to Adam and Arya who have reached level G in their Kumon studies this term. This is a huge achievement for many reasons, mainly being that Level G is the start of GCSE work and these boys are in Year 4!

Also, the boys must be praised for their continuous resilience and grit thought-out their Kumon studies. Both Adam and Arya have been on Kumon since Reception which requires them to complete extra maths tasks everyday including the school holidays and weekends! They have truly understood that to be successful, you must be prepared to put in the hard work. Even when they were faced with barriers or found it challenging  they did not give up.

In addition, by reaching  this landmark level the boys have proven that they have mastered the art of arithmetic maths. They can confidently work with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions and can use all operations to solve very complex problems.

Lastly, by mastering arithmetic the boys are now going on to even trickier algebraic maths which, as the president of Kumon stated in his letter to the boys:

" Algebra becomes the key problem-solving skill in many fields, such as Science, Engineering, Compuing and Economincs!                                    Tadashi Nakatsuka - President of Kumon (Europe)

So who knows what the future holds in terms of careers for the boys but with these skills embedded, they will have greater power to choose. Well done boys, we are all extremely proud of you and know where to come when we are struggling with our calculations!

A special mention must also be given to the families and teachers (past and present) of these boys. Without their on-going encouragement and support, this tremendous achievement could not have been made. As previously mentioned, the Kumon program requires a profound level of commitment from all involved to ensure it is successful; Adam and Arya's families have exhibited this commitment over the years and have been a great example of how Kumon should be used.

Year 2 Plant Things to Eat

The children in Year 2 have got green fingers after their busy week weeding and preparing the soil to then sow seeds. They demonstrated great reciprocity by working together to use various tools and got the soil in perfect condition, ready for planting.

"The soil needs to be ready otherwise it won't grow well" Leah Sharpe

"All the weeds are gone now. They cant kill our nice potatoes" Callie

They then planted the different seeds which they will monitor and watch grow over the coming term. This includes potatoes, strawberries and beans! The children now can't wait to take a bite of the fruits of their labour.

This was thanks to our personal gardener, Mr Wright, who has been over-seeing the process to ensure our we are treating our crops well...Thank you Mr Wright!

Keep your eyes peeled for an update on our planting progress!

Year 2 Curriculum Newsletter - Summer Term

Dear Parents and Carers,
Year 2 – Summer Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome back to the Summer Term! This term promises to be a busy one in Year 2. We have lots of exciting opportunities and experiences available for the children and cannot wait to get started! Children will also be completing their end of Key stage assessments in May but please remember that these do not form the full judgment on your child’s attainment.
Homework:
Remember, our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:
·         15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult and note in the reading record
·         15 minutes practicing spellings
·         15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

If children would like to attempt an additional challenge, we have a new Learning Challenge for children to attempt this Summer term which is attached. All of the activities are based around a significant person, poem or painting relating to our topics. Children do not have to attempt every activity but instead select the activities that they are most interested in and compile a project that reflects the extra time and effort that they have put into their challenge. We hope that children will take their time with the challenge.

Spellings:
Spellings will be given out on Mondays. The children should practise their words every evening. The test will take place on Fridays.
Trips & sharing assemblies
Cherry will be hosting their sharing assembly on 25th April.
Year 2 will be visiting the Park for a Science workshop (date tbc) and the Tower of London on 22nd June. We will also be welcoming some feathery additions into our classes…date to be kept as a surprise…
Curriculum Information
We have included a summary of the topics, which the children will be covering this term. If you would like to make any suggestions of what you or your child would like to learn in relation to the topics taught, please let the team know. We welcome any suggestions you may have.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Estall          Miss Hammond          Mr Jackson
