Stephen Wiltshire Sketching in Year 2

Year 2 have been learning about Stephen Wiltshire. They have discovered how he overcame adversity and used his inherent skills to enable him to achieve a successful career as an artist. Wiltshire struggled to be able to communicate as a youngster but found that drawing allowed him to become more calm and he could communicate through his sketches.

Wiltshire is able to commit to memory places he has seen and can then sketch these accurately. He is most famous for his sketches of different landmarks around the world, including vast city-scapes.
The children were excited to draw their own London landmarks and spent time honing and practising their sketching skills. They realised it was not as easy as it seemed to ensure the pencil made various shades of grey- dark and light- all down to how they held the pencil and the pressure they applied.

'Stephen Wiltshire is able to remember what he has seen and sketch it on a big screen' Jolene
'We chose our favourite landmark to sketch' Jersey
'We had to look carefully at the detail on our photo- to look for the shades' Maddison
'If we drew something on top we needed to make it darker so we could see it, like the tree in front of the building' Frankie
'We looked at how Wiltshire made day and night from how he shaded his pictures and how he made the water look like water without using colour' Tyler

Year 2's Mysterious Mission!

This term we are looking at fantastic explorers in Year two! At the moment we are looking at Christopher Columbus. The children received an exciting letter and a suitcase filled with clues and interesting objects. The class had great fun guessing what the clues might mean and what they were for and looking closely at the objects they found. The clues were a picture of Santa, the number 3, an ocean, America, the Spanish flag and a compass.

'I think it might be about a man called Columbus' Charlie T
'Maybe Columbus had to travel on a pirates ship' Freddie J
'I think they were on a boat and they traveled across the Atlantic ocean' Katlyn

'There was a globe and a compass- someone went travelling' Jacob
'Maybe Santa Claus went travelling with Columbus around the world' Maisie
'I think it might have taken him 3 years to travel' Peter

The children came very close to solving the clues through their reflective questioning and collaboration with other children in their class. Next, we used Ipads and books to research Christopher Columbus to see if the children's predictions were correct. Here are some of the interesting facts we discovered:

  • Christopher Columbus was born on October 31, 1451 in Genoa, Italy.
  • He began sailing when he was just a teenager.
  • He took his first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1476.
  • Columbus settled in Lisbon and married Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, before moving to Spain to live.
  • Columbus presented his idea of sailing west to find new trade routes to the Portuguese king who rejected it. He presented his ideas in Genoa and Venice, but the governments there said no too. He finally went to the Spanish monarchy. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand initially refused, but later agreed to help him. They gave him the money to buy three ships – the Santa
  • Maria, the Nina and the Pinta.
  • For a long time, most people believed that Christopher Columbus was the first explorer to "discover" America- but it has come to light that Vikings were there before. It is more accurate to say that he discovered it for the Western Europeans, who until then, didn't know of it.
  • Columbus died in 1506.

Maths in Year 1- adding and subtracting

Addition and Subtraction

This term, the children have been using their knowledge of adding and subtraction with numbers up 20, to solve problems.

They have been looking at addition and understanding that it is commutative (an be solved using either number first), but that they start should start with the larger number in order to add on efficiently.

In subtraction, the children have been learning that in Year 1, we start with the biggest number first and count backwards.

The children have been using many strategies to help them solve their calculations...

Number Line: Louie chose to use a number line to answer is subtraction number sentence. he started on the biggest number and jumped backward, remembering not to jump on the spot for his first jump.

20 Frame: Lilly chose to use a 20 Frame. She was familiar with the frame so could quickly and efficiently count out the starting number using counters. Starting with the largest number, she put 7 on the fram and using a different colour to show the differ amount she added it on.
She worked out the answer by putting 10 in her head and counting on 2.

Aboriginal Art in Year 2

Image result for aboriginal artRelated image

This term, Year 2 are exploring the world- locating the different continents and oceans and our place within these. Specifically, we have been looking at Australia and some of their traditions, such as, Aboriginal art. The children looked at various art pieces and identified what made them unique and different to lots of other art they had seen. Next, they had a go using paint and cotton buds to acquire the same technique.

Afterwards, we looked at lots of interesting facts about Aboriginal art:

  • Contemporary original art has been based on 'dreamtime'- the period of time which indiginous people believe the world was created.
  • Aboriginal art was created to help pass on information and stories to others as the people did not have a written language of their own.
  • Traditionally, the paintings were drawn on rocks and walls.
  • The dots were used to hide secret information, they obscured the secret symbols hidden underneath.
  • The most expensive Aboriginal art was sold in 2007 for $2.4 million!
I am sure you will agree, Year 2 is full of 'budding' artists!
