Star Writers

Here are this weeks fabulous Star Writers in Key Stage 1. Year 1 have been looking at the features of a Poem, particularly rhyming. This week the girls worked hard to write rhyming words in preparation for their own poems whereby, they will use these words to create rhyming couplets.
In year 2 the children wrote persuasive letters to stop our School trip being cancelled. They clearly did a great job using persuasive techniques as the trip went ahead as planned Tuesday!

Year 2 at The Tower Of London

What a brilliant day! The children in Cherry and Cedar class thoroughly enjoyed their day spent at the Tower of London. From the moment they stepped out of Tower Hill station they were in awe of the spectacular view of the Castle. As they walked around the moat the children gasped as they laid their eyes on all of the features of a Castle they have been learning about in class.
Once inside, we explored the narrow, twisting Towers and went into the White Tower (the Castle Keep). Here we saw a vast array of impressive armour and weaponry. To top it off we ended with a visit to the breath-taking, sparkly Crown Jewels.

The children were told historical stories as well as being taught lots of interesting facts about the Castle. For example, did you know that the Tower of London is not only a Castle but was also used as a prison and a zoo?

It was a pleasure seeing how engaged and enthusiastic the children were in their learning; they did us proud. So much so that a member of the public took the time to compliment the behaviour of the children whilst on public transport! To sum it up, in the words of Charlie and Tommy, "this was the best day ever!"

Star Writer

Congratulations Dora for winning star writer this week. Dora wrote an explanation piece about why Christians celebrate Advent. Dora explained they celebrate because this is when Jesus was born. Many Christians use Christingles, comprised of an orange, candle and sticks (with dried fruit) as part of the celebrations. Dora used her phonic knowledge to sound her words out carefully. Great work, Dora!

Star Writer

Congratulations Archie! Archie won star writer for his writing about Cinderella. Archie used a range of adjectives to describe all the characters. Great work!

Cherry Star Writers: Kaden Nicol and Max Holmyard

Well done to Kaden and Max for being Star Writers in Cherry class. Last week the children in years 2-6  wrote Thank You letters to somebody of their choice as part of a national competition.

Kaden and Max explained why they were thankful and used some great powerful sentences. Take a look for yourself!

Learning Challenges in Cedar

A big well done to Summer Rose Trew and Jessica Chilvers who have already completed the learning challenge for this term.

Both girls chose to create their own piece of art inspired by Georgia O'Keefe, Jessica using paper to create a 3D effect and Summer Rose using felt tip pens.

They also researched William the Conqueror and found 5 facts about him.

Did you know that William the Conqueror was 5ft10" which was very tall for people in that day!

Summer Rose and Jessica also wrote the poem 'The Dragon in the Playground' by Kenn Nesbitt in their neatest handwriting. They also thoroughly enjoyed reading the poem to their classmates!

Well done to these girls, here is a picture of their work:

Star writer Pine

Congratulations to star writers Alice and Violet. Both girls have been working hard in their writing and their writing has been improving as a result. They both use their phonic knowledge to help them with the spelling of the words they want to use and can independently use this skill. Keep up the good work!

Year 2 Music Festival

This morning, the children in Year 2 had a fantastic time visiting Hilldene Primary School for the annual Infant Music Festival. They sang a variety of songs with five other Schools in the local area and did so with great determination and enthusiasm. With big smiles on their faces and hats on their heads, they also sang their own song 'Raindrops keep falling on my head'. Although it was initially a daunting prospect for the children they demonstrated resilience proving they can overcome nerves and performed amazingly in front of the vast audience.
To finish the show the children from all Schools performed in a Cannon/Round, which required them to start singing at different intervals. This needed great skill to be able to isolate their own singing from others and remain focused. Again, they did this immaculately making all of the staff very proud.

The children will be performing all songs once more on Thursday morning for any family and friends who wish to attend. We look forward to showcasing our super singing yet again!

Cedar Star Writer: Ethan Himuyandi

Congratulations to Ethan for winning Star Writer in Cedar this week. Ethan wrote a fantastic newspaper report about a crime that happened in the classroom! Ethan was careful to use all the features of a Newspaper report including a heading and byline. Well done Ethan!

Cherry Star Writer: Jorja-Mae Dines

A huge well done to Jorja for being a Star Writer this week. She worked extremely hard to write a newspaper article after we discovered the class iPads were sneakily hidden from us. Jorja used many features of a newspaper article including a headline, by line and all the 'w's!

Year 2 Learning Challenge

Tomorrow the children will take home the Learning Challenge for this term.
Please join us in encouraging your children to complete as many elements of it as possible. This will allow them to further deepen their understanding of the learning taking place this term.
We look forward to seeing and celebrating the children's work.

Significant Person: William the Conqueror.

Poem: The Dragon on the Playground by Kenn Nesbitt.

There's a dragon on the playground
who descended from the skies.
He swooped down on the schoolyard
where he took us by surprise.

He leapt across the blacktop
in a single bounding stride,
erupting flames and lava
to incinerate the slide.

He reared his huge and scaly head
and flapped his leathery wings,
then set the soccer field ablaze
and blackened all the swings.

He cauterized the asphalt
with a sudden, fiery flash.
Then reeled upon the seesaw
and converted it to ash.

He melted all the monkey bars.
The sand was molten glass.
With nothing left to liquefy
he headed for our class.

I doubt we'll soon be rid of him
despite the fires he's set.
You see, our teacher likes him,
so he's now the teacher's pet.

Artist: Georgia O’Keefe. A sunflower from Maggie.
