We are working so hard in Cedar on problem solving using multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We are thinking about how to solve the problem using arrays, cubes or mentally. Then checking our answer using the inverse operation. We have even tried writing our own problems for others to solve.

Cedar working hard on division problems
Fractions in Year One
In Year one maths sessions this week, the children have been developing an understanding of fractions. Having learnt to play fraction dominoes this week, one group of children were set the challenge of making their own set of dominoes involving halving and quartering. They had to check their game worked before playing it with the rest of the class.
Some of the fractions the children came up with were: 1/2 of 10, 1/4 of 20, 1/4 of 4, 1/2 of 30, 1/2 of 400, 1/2 of 100 and even 1/4 of 888.
The game encouraged the children to have to generate their own question. For example; My answer is two, what is the question ? The children came up with two answers: 1/2 of 4 and 1/4 of 8.
Cedar star writers

Cedar's coding session.
Cedar have been enjoying coding in class. We used the Espresso coding programme on our IPads to give instructions for our character to move up and down. Our next step was to make 2 characters move in different directions. We can't wait for our next coding lesson next week.
Number bond challenge
Number bond Challenge!. Each child in the group was given an envelope with 9 triangles. Each triangle had 3 numbers on it. The children then had to make one large triangle from the smaller triangles. The challenge was to match each side of the triangle with another triangle to ensure the numbers totalled 10. After a minute or two, the children were given a clue...the colours also had to match. Sydney was the first to solve the challenge within 10 minutes!!!
Cedar's bird feeder
Last week as part of our Design and Technology work we designed a bird feeder. This week we used our designs to make our bird feeder, then we placed them outside and waited for the birds to enjoy their food. We placed them in various places outside where we thought the birds would see them best.
University of Broadford-Broadford Boutique
Broadford Boutique was incredibly busy this week. After learning about important health and safety rules regarding hair and nails last week, the girls are now ready to start developing their skills in hair styling and nail art. Split into two groups, set with two different tasks, an afternoon of fun commenced. One task was to master the wrap ponytail and the other task was to learn how to accurately apply nail polish. All the girls were extremely focused and successfully completed the tasks. We are already looking forward to next week! You may spot a couple of year one girls who were very keen to be hair models.

Number bonds in Year 1
In maths lessons the children have been working on number bonds and related subtraction facts with 20. To support the children with securing their understanding we have been using numicon, which has proved very popular.
Evie then decided to go and write some addition calculations of her own!
Sydney went on to find different ways to make 10.
Using numicon, Summer Rose independently chose ways to make 20.
Sydney then explored ways to make 20.
