Pine Class Bake Tudor Bread

Pine Class Bake Tudor Bread

In history, Year One have been learning about the Tudors as part of our Enchanted Forest topic. We have been comparing and contrasting life in Tudor times to life as we know it in the modern day. The children have been able to identify lots of differences between the way people lived in Tudor times compared to the way we live now and the reasons for these changes.

This week, we have been focusing on the food that Tudors ate and how they bought food. The children learnt that it wasn't as simple as going to the local supermarket for the weekly shop and bringing it home to put into the fridge!

After this discussion, half of the children made traditional white bread and the other half used a Tudor bread recipe for a brown loaf made with oats. The children had lots of fun mixing, kneading and baking the bread.

They especially enjoyed tasting them at the end of the day! Both the white bread and the Tudor loaf went down well -thumbs up all round!

Abracadabra! Potions in Year One

Abracadabra! Potions in Year One

The children in Year One have been learning about capacity and volume in maths this week. They have been using their new vocabulary to measure in full cups, half cups, nearly full cups and nearly empty cups to create some magical mystical potions! The children loved applying their new found knowledge in the potion stations and took their learning outside to experiment some more.

We have even taken measurement a step further with standard units, looking at millilitres using the jugs and measuring cylinders in our water area.

Great work with capacity Year One - well done for getting the measurements right and avoiding turning anyone into a frog!

"In Wales they have a different name, Crempog, and they kick tin cans in the streets outside to celebrate" Ruby
"Pancakes are made because in the olden days people had to use up all their good ingredients in their kitchens ready for Lent" Livi

Certificates in Year 2!

A massive congratulations to Madelina for her superb learning challenge and her certificate. We are always so excited when the children bring in their learning challenges and show us how they have been expanding their knowledge at home!

And congratulations to Aarna and Laura for their similar dedication with their home learning!
Please keep up the amazing work, we look forward to more Learning Challenges coming in!

Maths in Year 2

Fractions in Year 2!

In year 2 the children have just finished their unit on fractions. They had to interact with a variety of representations of halves, thirds and quarters; identifying them in shapes and then finding fractions of numbers.

We use multilink, division techniques (sharing) and visual representation to help the children access their learning.

They have also learned how to reason and problem solve within fractions, by proving or disproving false statements and reasoning out questions that have more than one answer where they must justify their opinion.

Next we are moving on to the wonderful world of measuring!

Outdoor learning and fun in Year 2

Outdoor learning

Whilst some children are learning in class, other pupils are continuing their learning experiences in the outdoor area.

Shajia, Ceejay and Abdulmalik decided to make an obstacle course using a variety of materials. They then decided that it didn't look safe and changed it until they were happy. To enhance the challenge they timed themselves and tried to get faster.

To enjoy the hot weather we had, the children decided to make sunbeds and relax after all their hard work inside! They improved upon their designs by raising the sunbeds off of the floor.

Other children weren't relaxing though, and instead used the resources to create their own version of horseshoe. They kept score by counting in steps of 2, 5, and 10 to keep their maths brains working whilst they were also being active.

Finally, some children decided to have a go at the teacher's challenge that gets changed weekly. This challenge relates to the learning that his happening in class. The children were puzzling over how much of a shape was shaded and deciding what fraction it represented.

Our outdoor learning is an important part of Year 2 and the children never cease to amaze us with their ingenuity!

World Book Day Fun in Year One!

World Book Day Fun in Year One!

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” - Dr Seuss

Pine Class were delighted to come into school dressed as their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day. We had a fantastic day filled with all things book related!

Promptly after arriving at school, Pine Class had the chance to read with some of the Year 4 children in Birch Class. The children enjoyed listening to Birch share some of their favourite stories with them. Encouraged by the older children in the school, Pine Class also showed their own reading skills, quickly finding their favourite books in the classroom and reading them to Year 4 with confidence.

In the afternoon, it was time for the 'Book Door Competition'. Pine Class were busy drawing, writing and making collages for our chosen book 'Rainbow Fish'. The children showed their reciprocity skills, working together to decide were all their creations should go. The door turned out fantastic - as you can see!

Well done Pine Class for embracing your love of books on World Book Day and to all of the parents for creating such brilliant costumes - very creative!

Pancake Day in Pine Class!

Pancake Day in Pine Class!

After discussing Shrove Tuesday and the reasons that we make pancakes on Pancake Day, the children in Pine class were keen to make some delicious pancakes of their own. They applied the skills they have been learning in maths this week, measuring out the ingredients in non-standard units.

The children showed great reciprocity skills, working together to measure the ingredients and taking turns to mix the pancake batter.

Then came the best part - eating them! Everybody enjoyed choosing their toppings and tucking into their pancake. Melted chocolate and lemon and sugar were firm favourites!

Scientific Shadows

Year 2 spent some of the week in darkness, whilst exploring the topic light and dark in their Science lessons. They learnt all about the sun and moon and why we have daytime and night time, which linked in with their previous learning on the different seasons.

The children had lots of fun experimenting with the torches to make shadows!

"Making shadows is so much fun!" - Olivia

"You have to shine the torch behind your hand to make a shadow." - Amy

World Book Day Fun in Year 2

The children in Year 2 had a great time celebrating World Book Day yesterday. It was lovely to see the children all dressed up as their favourite book characters, which made choosing a winner from each class very difficult.

"I love reading it is really fun." - Hannah

All of the children were able to take part in lots of activities that took place throughout the day, but the most exciting part of the day was when the Year 2 children had the opportunity to listen to the Year 6 children read to them.

"I really like reading with the Year 6 children." - Tyler

Year 2 Art Workshop Day

Many thanks to everyone who sent in newspapers last week for our workshop. As a result we were able to create a boat with our visiting artist, which the children have enjoyed using outdoors at choice time.

The children were excited to meet the artist who showed us lots of things he had made out of recyclable materials and all of the inventions he has created. The children liked the multi-scissors and thought about how this would b useful in class when they were cutting tape.

The classes worked collaboratively over the day to build their boat, learning lots of new skills and following instructions. They used clippers, ties, learned to fold and roll and use the inventions provided.

"I loved working with my friends using the rolling machine" Keira
"The machine makes the paper roll really tight and makes it strong and hard so it will stay up" Courtney
"You needed to fold the paper in a special way, glue it and use the rolling machine. The ties stuck all the sticks together" Iyinope
