Music in Pine

Each week, Pine class have been studying music with their specialist music teacher- learning about the pitch of their voices, new songs to sing and a wide range of instruments. This week we were fortunate enough to listen to and join in to live music because our teacher brought in her ukulele to accompany us!

Year 1 kite making

Year 1 have been studying the history of flight for their topic of "heroes throughout history". We've been finding out about the Wright brothers and their early inventions based on their studies of birds in flight. We have been excitedly making our own kites ready to fly on a windy day... following in the footsteps of the Wright brothers.

Here are some of our designs in Pine class- we cannot wait to give them a try!

Pine star writer!

Congratulations to our star writer Laicey! Laicey wrote about her hero Crystal man. He helps fight crime and saves the world! Sounds like a worthy hero! Laicey remembered her spellings to help her with her writing, as well as carefully using her phonics knowledge to help her spell new words. Well done Laicey!

Year 2 Great Fire of London workshop.

Year 2 enjoyed their Great Fire of London workshops this morning. They acted out scenes from that day in 1666. They enjoyed being the raging fire and the strong wind which spread the fire. The children recreated a scene of a market in 1666 and what would be sold. There are some fantastic actors in Year 2.

Going dotty for pop art!

Year 1 have been discovering pop art! We have been 'spotting' lots of pop art in our superhero resources around the class and finding out about the use of pop art in comics. We've been looking at pop art words in particular and have begun creating our own examples, ensuring to create them in a similar style, using the Ben-Day dot technique often used by pop artist Lichtenstein.

"It has to be bright colours to make it stand out" Laicey.
"We have painted using dots just like the art we have seen" Tommy.

Pine class have made a great start to their art pieces- we all look forward to the final results!

Cedar Star Writer

Fayo was awarded Star Writer in Cedar this week for a fantastic diary entry about his life in a Year 2 so far. Well done Fayo!

Cherry Star writer: Ronnie Mersh.

Well done to Ronnie for writing a great set of instructions about how to complete a fire drill.
He opened each instruction with an adverb of time and punctuated his work well!

Evie's learning challenge

Well done Evie for producing a fantastic painting in the style of Kay Craig's  Big Ben London Cityscape for her learning challenge. I think you will agree it is very similar to the original.

Mulberry's Pop Art

Over the last week, the children have been looking at a range of pop art.
They liked the colours that were used and were particularly interested in the different painting techniques.

We decided to create our own pop art paintings linked to our topic 'superheroes'. The children chose an onomatopoeic word from our superhero sound board  and wrote it in bubble writing. They then painted the letters using dots. The children will continue to work on their paintings over the next couple of weeks and we will blog the painting when they are finish. The children can't wait to show off their hard work!

Cherry class test materials for flammability!

This afternoon Cherry class became Scientists! They investigated which materials were most flammable and made brilliant observations of what happened.

We noticed that the plastic cup melted but the paper turned to ash almost instantly. On the other hand, the brick, stone and metal did not appear to burn. We are looking forward to investigating this further to see if these materials would burn under different conditions such as a bigger fire or leaving them to burn for longer.

Charlie's learning challenge.

Well done Charlie for completing the year 2 learning challenge. Charlie produced a fantastic collage of London and enjoyed sharing this with Cedar class talking about all the places he has visited in London

Mulberry- star writer of the week!

Congratulations to Amandeep this week for her superhero writing. Once Amandeep had finished her work, she wanted to go back and make improvements. She showed a great attitude towards her writing. Amandeep used her phonics knowledge to sound out all of her words independently.
Well done Amandeep, keep up the hard work and continue to reflect and improve your writing!

Cherry Star writer: Sofia Raif.

Well done to Sofia for being our star writer this week. Sofia has only been with us for a few weeks and has already grasped our key job to "do your best in every lesson". This week she recorded reasons why the Great fire of London spread using conjunctions to extend her sentences.

Pine Heroes!

Pine class have been looking at the qualities and characteristics needed to become a hero. We looked at heroes from the past, heroes we might know and heroes in society. Then we created our own heroes for our class display, writing key quality words on the back. Children came up with kind, helpful, caring, strong, big heart and working hard to name just a few!

Congratulations to James- our first star writer of the year! James wrote about his favourite superhero- Spiderman, as part of our topic this term about heroes. James worked hard using his phonic knowledge to sound out his words. Well done James!

Cedar Star Writer

Congratulations to Summer Rose who was awarded Star Writer this week after producing a wonderful diary entry from the point of view of someone in the Great Fire of London. Summer Rose set the scene perfectly by explaining what she saw and did. Well done!

Cedar show Reciprocity in P.E

At Broadford we recognise the importance of equipping the children with skills they need to become effective life long learners. This half term we are focusing of developing reciprocity. This involves the children learning how to work together as well as being able to work independently.

In Cedar the children showed reciprocity in P.E when playing games with the parachute. The aim was to work together as a class to get a ball all the way around the parachute without it falling down the hole in the middle. After several attempts the children succeeded!
