The Big Pedal Starts Monday 3rd March

Get set … the Big Pedal starts on Monday!

If you are taking part this is what you have to do.

Ride your bike or scooter to school wearing your helmet. When you arrive at school walk your wheels to the storage facilities and lock them up. If the storage is full you will be able to walk your wheels and store them outside your classroom.

You can earn house points for your team as well as points towards the school’s big pedal results!

Enjoy the ride!

Barleylands Farm

Year 2 have had an amazing day at the farm: beautiful weather, a bumpy tractor ride and lots of friendly animals. Not forgetting creating our delicious pizzas.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day! Here are our pictures which show the fantastic activities we took part in.

Off we go to the wheat field.

Georgia Teaches Us About Road Safety

After a recent assembly on road safety Georgia went home and made a brilliant poster. Georgia's poster teaches us to stop, look and listen before crossing the road. A very important message for us all to remember.

Well done Georgia, keep up the excellent work!

Barleylands. Year 2.

Glorious sunshine filled the sky today for our trip to Barleylands. We had a jam-packed day full of activities relating to this terms topic which is all about food.

We learnt about where our food comes from and saw for ourselves the process of flour being made. We saw where the seeds are sown, harvested and how the crop is then ground to make flour. In addition we learnt all about the different foods we can find this ingredient and even made our own mini-pizzas. Our food critics, (the children) gave their pizzas a whopping 10/10. Yum!

We then got to take a ride on the tractor and visited the farm whereby we were ever so lucky to feed the animals and see the cute 2 week old lambs! With a heavy heart we, sadly, had to say goodbye to all the adorable animals and head back to school. However, all the children are keen to continue their learning over the coming weeks so watch this space!

FACT.
Did you know the top of the wheat crop where we get the flour is called the 'ear'? Each ear holds about 40-60 wheat seeds.

What an informative day!

I Made My Teacher Happy

These wonderful children in EYFS and Year 1 and 2 have been representing Broadford Primary very well this week and have made their teachers extremely happy. Showing kindness to others, having perfect manners and demonstrating a great attitude to learning were some of the reasons they were selected to receive certificates. Well done!

Doubling for The Little Red Hen

The focus story in Year 1 this week has been 'The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza'  and in our maths the children had to help the Little Red Hen solve a problem. Having already collected all of the ingredients to make her pizza the Little Red Hen then had a phone call announcing the arrival of more guests. Unfortunately she hadn't got enough of each ingredient to make the pizza so the children had to use their doubling abilities to help her. They focused on using different strategies to work out answers and were encouraged to use the maths help desk to find the best way to get 'unstuck' when they found it challenging. Lots of resilience was demonstrated and the children did a brilliant job of using different addition strategies to help the Little Red Hen!

Using a 100 square to count on as the numbers started getting larger.

Mental addition by holding the number in our head and counting on.

Adding the tens and units to double a number.

The Big Pedal 2014 - 3-14 March

The Big Pedal is a giant inter-school cycling and scooting competition that encourages children, teachers and parents to choose two wheels for their school journeys.

This year’s competition will span 10 school days, from 3 to 14 March, and the more children who scoot and cycle each day, the more points your school will earn. Schools right across the UK will be competing against each other, and the competition is weighted according to the size of the school, so everyone has a fair chance to win.

There are more than 20 fantastic prizes up for grabs, including bike and scooter stunt displays, children’s bikes, scooter parking and more!

This year’s event features new and souped-up versions of the popular wheelie characters – there are 10 to collect, one for each day of the event. Each day we will log the school’s daily result on the Big Pedal website and will be rewarded with a wheelie to add to your own Big Pedal wallchart. The characters’ design will depend on the number of people who cycled and scooted that day, and the aim is to fill the wallchart with as many super-strength, super-powered, superhero wheelies as possible!

Adventure Story

This afternoon the boys in the photo collaborated fantastically to create their own adventure story. After telling the story with small world characters they were challenged to find a way of sharing it with other children. With enthusiasm they then began to record the story on a large roll of paper. Great fun was had and the children even managed to consider their writing targets when writing their sentences!
