Cherry explore the materials at Broadford!
In Science Cherry class have been busy looking for different materials around the school grounds. We discussed the properties of these materials and what we think they would be good for...we decided a cotton wool door would not be very practical! We heard some great 'wow' words from the children such as: flexible, rigid, shiny, rough and transparent.
I wonder what different materials you can find in your homes?

Learning Our Number Bonds
Pine Class have been working really hard to develop their mental maths skills. This week we have been busy playing lots of dice games involving counting on and adding. Today we focused on learning our number bonds to 5. Number bonds' are pairs of numbers which add together to make up each number. The number bonds for seven, for instance, are 3+4, 2+5, 1+6 and 0+7. To have a quick grasp of addition and subtraction, it's vital to know number bonds for each number up to ten. We went outside with big sticks and after a little whole class practise split into two teams. One team had to pick a secret number to tap and the other team had to add the extra taps needed to make 5. It was a challenge at first but by the end of the session the children were beginning to work out the answer without needing to count out loud!

Art Outside
We wanted to brighten up our outside area so the children decided to create a board that would explode with colour. We will be looking at light and dark in our science lessons so chose a black background to contrast to the brightly coloured chalks. The children talked about the different ways they could use chalk to create effects and had a great time smudging, swirling and scraping to decorate their board.
Exploring Sounds
In our music lesson today Pine class explored the different sounds instruments can make, we talked about how we could describe our sounds and how we played our instruments. We then made a class composition and learnt how to stop our instruments really quickly when the conductor finished. The children enjoyed using the instruments and worked very well together to create some great music.
I Made My Teacher Happy
Each week in the Key Stage 1 assembly we celebrate children who have made their teacher happy. These children were selected for the happy book this week because they have been helpful, polite and have worked very hard. Congratulations to you all and keep up the hard work!

Year 1 PE - Remember your kit!
The children in Year 1 have adapted to their new environment quickly and are managing the transition to KS1 well. We have made sure classrooms and the outdoor environment reflect the EYFS ethos and the children continue to have opportunities to learn through play. There are a few changes that come with moving into the infants and one of these includes weekly PE lessons with our specialist PE teacher. Please ensure your child has their PE kit and all items are clearly labelled, PE kit can remain in school until half term. Here are some photos of the children enjoying their first week in year 1.
